ALLEN PARK -- It appears Champ Bailey won't be coming to Detroit.
According to a source close to the trade negotiations, the Detroit Lions have pulled out of the talks because the Washington Redskins' asking price of a first-round draft pick was too high.
The Lions' strategy was to wait for the trade demand to be reduced -- the Lions would've agreed to a second-round pick this year and a second-round pick next year -- but the Redskins are ready to deal now.
Several teams are in hot pursuit of Bailey, the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback, including the Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets.
The Broncos have offered Pro Bowl running back Clinton Portis, who wants to renegotiate his contract, in exchange for Bailey. The Seahawks have also jumped into the picture, dangling Pro Bowl running back Shaun Alexander for Bailey.
There has also been talk of a three-way trade between the Redskins, Broncos and Jets with Bailey landing in New York, Portis is Washington and Denver acquiring draft picks.
With all the interest in Bailey, and Washington's desire to deal him before March 3, Lions officials believe there's no chance the Redskins will reduce their trade demand.
The Lions have the sixth overall pick in the first round, where they have a lot of good options and will hold on to it. The Lions will either go for an explosive defensive player (Miami safety Sean Taylor), a game-breaking receiver (Roy Williams, Larry Fitzgerald or Mike Williams) or they'll trade down and pick up additional choices.
