January 2003

On June 1, 2003 I will be joining 20,000 runners in San Diego, Californai for the Rock N Roll Marathon (yes, that’s 26.2 miles)! I am entering the race as a member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training marathon group. The Society’s mission is to cure leukemia and its related cancers – lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since its founding, the Society has allocated more than $280 million to research.

Thanks to the Society’s programs that provide funding for research, today there is an 80% survival rate for those diagnosed with Leukemia. In 1960 that rate was 4%. Hodgkin’s disease is now one of the most curable forms of malignancy. Survival rates have almost doubled from 40% in 1960 to 80% today. Although these statistics prove that much progress has been made, there is still work to be done. Currently, every 9 minutes in the United States, a child or adult dies from leukemia or these related cancers.

As a member of Team in Training, each participant runs the marathon in honor of a patient or survivor of one of these cancers. We can also run in memory of someone who has lost the battle. In addition to running the marathon (which symbolizes endurance and hope for these patients), I have committed to train for the next 3 months, and to raise a total of $3,500 – for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This, as you may have guessed, is where you come into the picture. Won’t you please join in our effort?

I am asking you to contribute any amount of money you can, not to mention your encouragement and prayers, to help me reach this goal. Your gifts are tax deductible, and whatever amount you donate will be very much appreciated. Checks should be made payable to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America. Simply send the check to the address shown below. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Office (800/347-1074).

You have my heartfelt and sincere thanks for helping me meet this challenge.

Gratefully,

Jamie Bachman

P.S. If you have a loved one that has passed away or is currently coping with one of these cancers, I would be honored to add their names to our group. Please let me know your wishes.

We have something in common here, T2W...I lost my mother to leukemia and I am also involved with this society. Very glad to hear that your wife came through, as we know what a miserable bastard this disease can be, not only for those who have to suffer with it but for their loved ones as well.

T2W and Nicotine..Thanks for the replys and my thoughts and prayers go out to both of you.

My girlfriend is actually running the marathon and I'm helping her with the fundraising. She has a cousin that survived leukemia two years ago and I saw what kind of battle it can be.

Thanks again for everyone's time!

Sorry to hear everyone's stories about this disease.

I had originally thought you were having people make checks out to you, but see that the donations are to be made out to the charitable cause that you mentioned. Good luck in your efforts.
