Swain County where Cherokee is located used to have the highest unemployment rate (28%)in the State of NC until Harrah's came in about 20 years ago with the slots only casino. About 3 years ago live deal came , followed by alcohol sales. Sadly, even though each member gets a really good cut of the casino wealth ,there is still a lot of poverty because the money goes out as fast as it comes in. Unfortunately, many of the stereotypes are a reality in Cherokee.
