Personally I don't care and I don't think SOS is as important as you make it out to be. That says nothing about the team you are ranking. It leaves some room for doubt but nothing more. It proves nothing. In USC's case, it's a convenient excuse to rid yourself of the team you fear the most. So you make SOS the biggest factor of them all. That approach is full of holes in so many ways I cant' begin to explain how. SOS does NOT make the team. How much more obvious can anything be?
I agree, somewhat. But SOS must be considered in the bottom line when comparing teams with the same record.
Prime example this year is Tulsa. At the halfway point this year, they were ranked 1# in points/game and near the top in yards/game, yet played a SOS at the near bottom of 1-A.
I see in Tulsa's case an EXTREME example of SOS (as well as anyone can say with just 1/2 season played) carrying more weight. SOS changes throughout the season so I bet their stats didn't hold up throughout. Also, how strong were their opponents when they played them compared to where they end up when the time comes to rank the best at the end?
And what about other statistical rankings, total defense/total offense best vs pass/rush etc.? Wouldn't that offset SOS if a team is ranked #1 in some key statistical categories like an overpowering top rated team should be if it has a weak SOS? And shouldn't a team's rank be lower if they have a poorer statistical rank in some key categories too?
This sort of thing is never talked about in the human polls, mostly just SOS, and who knows how they break things down in the computer rankings?
I think to get to the truth you might need to rank a winless team beneath a one-loss team but that will probably never fly (unless you are MWC or WAC) though the truth could easily be found there. Just saying.
Right now, Tulsa is still #2 in points/game and #1 in yards/game. They have since lost to Arkansas and Houston. Havent been any surprise teams on the schedule. My point is, SOS should be considered along with stats.
Nice try. Who ever said that SOS doesn't count? You have no point to make.
The question is why are key stat rankings not considered? They are just as important as SOS.
