But the thing is, if it was legalized, the gov't would take a % of the profits. It wouldn't cripple the lotto, it would supplement it.

Show me one legitimate moral code that endorses or even accepts gambling. Actually, don't waste your time because you won't find it.

Public policy should not be made based on the fleeting will of the people at any given time. You are way out of your league here, Fishhead. Stick to playing slot machines for a living.

America has lots of problems like obesity, heart disease and diabetes from bad dieting habits, liver disease from excessive drinking and an overall coursening of societal standards regarding language, dress and general behavior. Legalizing gambling on sports will solve none of those problems and most likely will only make things worse. If gambling is your vice (like it is for yours truly), then live outside the law and just accept that your inconvenience is for the betterment of society.

Nick- You're forgetting that gambling already is legal and accepted. Except for a few Bible Belt southern states, gambling is available all over the US, and is very legitimate. Casinos, off track betting shops, horse and dog tracks, lotteries, they're all over and are absolutely legitimate. So you're wrong in saying that society doesn't accept gambling. The only thing different is that sports betting has not YET been legalized and taxed like the other forms of gambling. I happen to feel that betting sports is much more legitimate than going to my local riverboat casino and betting that a stranger is going to roll a 5 before a 7.

I don't buy the argument that if you legalize something illicit, there will be a huge stampede towards vice.

If heroin is legalized tomorrow, I'm not all of a sudden going to run out and get on the spike.

I also don't think that people buy lottery scratchers as a legal alternative to sports betting. If you like to play craps, you play craps. Everybody has their game of choice.

The investigation was begun because a concerned citizen came and asked for help, according to Detrick.

5 bucks sez the citizen was "concerned" because he hadn't paid up and was "concerned" about his kneecaps.

sure...it'd be a lot less stressful to pay the taxes than to have to worry about hiding the profits coming into your bank account.

I think tax evasion is the only thing that any of us could get in trouble for, so I just report my net profit at the end of the year as gambling income.

the guy in question used to be my bookie's bookie in Maryland. Very small town with little intelligence, though everyone knew what this guy was into. Most of the county gambled with him at one time or another.

It's an elected official's job to decide what is best for society. If such a large majority of the country wanted legalized sports gambling then politicians would be running on that platform all over the place. None are.

Again, lots of responses to my post using the "two wrongs equals a right" theory. Yeah, yeah... abortions are legal, lotteries are legal and that's all great. How about focusing on *legalized sports betting* and whether that should be legal? I am more than willing to take my vice offshore illegally and there are a lot of people who share my opinion. Let those who want to be on the other side of the counter worry about the law, because outside of *extremely* rare cases, people who just bet and don't book have little to worry about anyway.

Nick is right about that, we all should be careful what we wish for. States will say lets legalize it and then you will get Oregon Sports Action. Even worse to protect their revenues they will put in strictly enforced rules against betting on sports. That would be the worst thing for us all. Right now we have no one that really is against offshore betting except for a handful of religious guys. Add in the state lotteries and the equation becomes a lot different.

While it seems stupid, lets face it we will never see a UK style system here. They can't even build a casino in Las Vegas anymore without protests from hundreds of local residents. I remember reading in Virginia about how they were going to open an OTB that would have 150 patron capacity, I mean basically what a Pizza Hut would have. They had hundreds in the community, business owners and residents of all stripes, out complaining about it. An OTB!!! Bottom line is most people, no matter what their stance on gambling itself, don't want any kind of gambling establishment around. Unless you can do it like the lottery or do it online, it will never get off the ground.

It has nothing to do with 2 wrongs don't make a right.

It has to do with been consistent in your decision making.

Regulation would be great but unfortunately, yes, the US Govt would screw it up.
