Bird goes to Boston, to team with Cowens, Tiny Archibald and Pitols Pete all NBA greats!

I mean neither guy single handidly put his team on the map....If Bird and Magic went to Denver and Cleveland they would have done no better! Please...

Those Celtics you mentioned were either near retirement or well past their better days. The names you should be mentioning are Dennis Jones, Cedric Maxwell, Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, etc...not exactly all-time NBA greats.

Magic had it much easier, without a doubt, with Kareem there.

You might also want to look at the Magic, first year with Shaq. Spurs first year with Duncan and first year with Robinson.

The standard is pretty high, even just using a one-year criteria.

The NAMES I mentioned WERE the MAIN players on the 60 win team Bird`s first year, besides Bird of course....Johnson, McHale and Parrish didn`t have anything to do with that team...

You`re jumping around making more out of what the thread started out to be..which is the NBA is a league that has ben troubled for 5-6 years since so many old school players all retired around the same time....My point was these two fresh young superstars could bring the league back, at the very least stabelize the free fall...

I am in no way saying they will end up Larry Bird and Magic, but they have came into the league and carried two lagging franchises back to respectability, all out their tender age...quite remarkable IMO...

Your right J~Man, but so did Vince Carter, T~Mac with Toronto, and Kobe of course also is a franchise player, but.........Those guys haven't been able to regain the amount of interest or popularity in the league as the NBA would of liked, so these 2 may not be able to do so either. Not sure if there's much hope for this league anymore.......

Carter can`t stay healthy though, and still avgs 20+...But IMO he has been a complete disappointment since his breakout...T Mac has been a victim of a poor surrounding cast, and a big mouth (remember last year lol) and Kobe was doing just fine til the off season...

I think these two will be better and will both be champions a few times...

The other reason for the comparison was these two came in as rivals (media driven) and have fully lived up to the hype and have exceeded it....

Deniro makes a good point, the NBA could use some white players but, its not happening! The white player is Dirk Novitski and thats it, and he`s imported...

I still ike what both these guys have brought to the NBA...How do we as a culture get rid of HIP HOP? That would be a good start in getting rid of the bad attitude and image the league has...

Thuggers-Iverson,Wallace,Sprewell,Webber(Jr thug) Artest, its these type attitudes that kill the sport.

Well, I totally agree with you on that. The hip-hop thug mentality has turned quite a few people off it.

I think the league itself will have to make some changes before any players will be able to raise the popularity again. The game frankly is staid compared to the college game. Players earn megamillions while waltzing through the regular season, the playoffs last forever, and the refereeing is often a joke.

The physical talent is certainly the best in the world. It just looks more and more every year like getting a cool picture of a slam is more important than winning a ring.

As much as I like Bird, Melo and James will go down as a better duo than Bird and Magic - I consider Melo straight out of high school - NEVER have two kids out of high school had this kind of impact - Garnett and Kobe were nothing the first year in the league - these two are already two of the best.

These guys are comparable statistically, that alone says alot IMO...The league is down morally we all know it...These kids (they are kids) have put the league on their back, all I ever meant was they have done a great job with the weight of the league on their shoulders...and at their age!

I doubt anyone could have the same impact completely, the NBA will never be back at 1979 ...Cable TV for one....and the stars being aligned just perfectly for Magic and Larry Bird....These two are so mature for their ages...

The glaring differnece between the players is field goal %. Were defenses in the NBA worse in 1979? Or were Magic and Bird just much better shooters? Imagine a guard shooting over 50% today (while averaging close to 20PPG).

Speaking of the Cavs, they were 14-28 before they acquired point guard Jeff McInnis for Darius Miles, they then went on a 17-8 tear until he hurt his shoulder last week. Since then, they are 0-3 and now are in danger of dropping out of the eighth and final playoff spot this weekend. Yes, LeBron James is a fabulous talent and the best rookie we've seen since Tim Duncan. But the guy who has made everything work for the Cavs has been McInnis, and if he doesn't get back to where he can actually compete again in the next week or two, they'll end up back in the lottery.
