The first time, and one of the very few times in my life, when I called a radio talk show was on Larry King's #1 show around 1983.
Larry was championing the position of Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black on the issue of free speech, and I called with my opinion that some other judicial views on free speech stood on a more principled foundation.
Larry abruptly hung up on me in way less than 60 seconds.
While I was going from juiced up and prepared to make the phone call, then anxiously waiting on hold, then pissed he just hung up on me, the next caller, amazingly, then made a comment that he thought the previous caller was starting to make an interesting point, and Larry mumbled through some stupid excuse that he thought I was wrongly (or unfairly) slamming Justice Black.
We had a history, lol. I was a long time listener, before and after, and he did some good work. I remember his comment that he never had anything close to a planned itinerary of questions when he sat down to do an interview, but he certainly found a way to engage his guests in interesting conversation.
RIP, Larry King.
