OK Goldenpicks. I have some hints for you. Decide what jobs you want, figure out what the employer will be expecting of you, and dont wait for them to call you.
The job I wanted started at 6:15am. I knew from a bit of research that it was not a brainy job, rather it was one where Id never be able to miss work (except holidays), and could not show up late. Other than being present and attentive, the only thing that required half a brain was that I could quickly add and subtract fractions. Id used a tape measure, so I had that down pat.
There were about 50 people in the position that I was looking for, they were taking classes of 8 to 10 new hires at a time, about every 2 months. I was one of the few without a college degree and having no real interest in the job I was performing. I just wanted a paycheck and a job where I could move up in more than one direction.
I called every 2 times each week at 6am and left a message on the human resource manager's voice mail... "Hi, this is so and so, you have my resume on file, I dont know if everyone will show up today, but If I had the job, Id already be in the office". I left this message on mondays (because I knew people get the blues then) and on fridays (because many with decent jobs start their weekends early).
I got a few calls back saying, 'Sir, we have reviewed your resume and qualifications, and we really dont feel that you will fit into this job very well, but we will keep your resume on file'.
It didnt slow me down, I kept up my calls. After 7 weeks, I received a call at 6:30am in the morning (someone must have called in sick or shown up late) and was told to arrive the next day on time and Id have a job.
I ended up doing very well there, and was hired by one of the highest respected firms in the building within 4 months.
I never looked back, and I never forgot that when looking for employement, the ball is in your court, not the employers.
