any updates to this now that the Wood, Ark Derby and Blue Grass have been run?

Also does anyone have the list of graded stakes earnings of the 3 year olds in order. Id like to see how difficult it will be for some of the ones on the outside looking in to actually get in. (like eddington)

Lack of earnings may keep Eddington, Rock Hard Ten out of Derby

Saturday’s Triple Crown prep races at Aqueduct, Keeneland Race Course, and Oaklawn Park not only sorted out more legitimate contenders for the 130th running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) three weeks later at Churchill Downs, but they also diminished the hopes of some looking to gain entry into the race due to a lack of graded stakes earnings.

In the event the race is overfilled, graded stakes earnings determine the 20 starting spots for the Kentucky Derby on May 1. The race does not have an also-eligible list.

With two more graded stakes events still left to run before the Derby—the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) on April 17 at Keeneland and $100,000 Derby Trial Stakes (G3) on April 24 at Churchill—several runners that figure to be among the main threats in the race are on the outside looking in based on a lack of earnings.

Halfbridled, who is expected to start in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) the day before the Derby, is the leading Triple Crown nominee by graded stakes earnings with $920,000, followed by fellow Oaks probable Ashado with $865,000. Those two are followed by Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner The Cliff’s Edge ($793,258), champion Action This Day ($780,000), Florida Derby (G1) winner Friends Lake ($611,000), Arkansas Derby (G2) winner Smarty Jones ($600,000), and Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) winner Tapit ($530,000).

Because the highly regarded Eddington and Rock Hard Ten are deep on the list of earnings in 34th and 36th positions, respectively, they would most likely need help through defections to gain entry into the field.

The others that figure to have guaranteed their starting spot in the Derby field, if their connections opt to run, include Castledale (Ire), Limehouse, Lion Heart, Read the Footnotes, Wimbledon, Pollard’s Vision, Imperialism, Minister Eric, Birdstone, Borrego, Sinister G, Value Plus, St Averil, and Master David.

Madcap Escapade, another filly headed to the Oaks, is 11th on the list with $400,000 in graded earnings.

With the three fillies excluded, Tiger Hunt would be ranked 20th on the list with $165,500, although he is not likely to start in the Kentucky Derby following a disappointing run in the Northern Spur Breeders’ Cup Stakes on the Arkansas Derby undercard.

Preachinatthebar, who could have locked up his spot if not for a poor performance in the Blue Grass, would be next with $159,000, followed by the Lexington-bound Saratoga County ($156,500), Kitten’s Joy ($120,000), Capitano ($115,000), Kilgowan ($110,000), Pro Prado ($105,685), Tricky Taboo ($100,000), and Consecrate ($100,500).

The graded stakes earnings list had to be used to determine the Derby field in 2002, when notables Windward Passage and Sunday Break (Jpn) were left out of the field.—Tom Law
