Sunland Park’s most important prep race for the Kentucky Derby is the Sunland Derby, contested on the dirt main track at a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs). The race gives the top four finishers points toward a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate. The race was first run in 2003 and achieved Grade 3 status for the 2011 edition, shortly after Mine That Bird ran fourth in the 2009 race in preparation for his 50-1 upset in the Kentucky Derby.

Hey Skoda Sunland Park Derby is also a KY Prep. Runs this Sat 3/25

I'll have my eye on the Louisiana Derby as I have a 30-1 Kentucky Derby futures wager on Kingsbarns. This race produced the Derby winner in 2019 and 2021. Is 2023 next?

Been to that Drive thru window at Keeneland Skoda. Placed some losing wagers there back in the day.

Odd year! Good spot will look at 30-1 will fit in nice with payouts. Derby trends/payouts can be "Rich Strike"

I'm liking my 30-1 futures ticket even more after today!

Kingsbarns 98 Beyer in the Lou Derby

Thought he ran better than that number. Although that's a nice number.

2022 winner finished 2nd after winning Derby ton Hot Rod Charlie.... This factors in also...
slow pace probably factored into that Number

A horse is ineligible to start in a race when: A thoroughbred, it has shoes (racing plates) which have toe grabs with a height greater than two millimeters (0.07874 inches), bends, jars, caulks, stickers or any other traction device on the front hooves while racing or training on all racing surface.

toe grab is a raised rim on the toe area of a horseshoe; its purpose is to help the horse “dig in” to the track and reduce slipping (much like football or baseball cleats). also would think it propels.

Not mentioned anywhere for anyone to factor in capping? Also think only trainer and jockey know about unless...... ?

I have not had the Derby winner in 64 years maybe 65th is the year! The Derby is the one race I put some time in picking a winner aka handicapping?
