CHIEFS TERMINATE THE CONTRACT OF WR JOHNNIE MORTON

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Thursday that the club has terminated the contract of WR Johnnie Morton.

“We appreciate Johnnie Morton’s effort during his tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs,” Peterson stated. “We wish him the best in the future.”

Morton (6-0, 185) played in 43 games (42 starts) in his three seasons (2002-04) with Kansas City. He caught 134 passes for 1,932 yards (14.4 avg.) with eight touchdowns and added 25 carries for 261 yards (10.4 avg.). In 2004, he recorded 55 receptions for 795 yards (14.5 avg.) with three TDs. He originally joined the club as a free agent on March 29, 2002.

Morton entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick (21st overall) of Detroit in ‘94. He played in career 126 regular season games (104 starts) with the Lions, catching 469 passes for 6,499 yards (13.9 avg.) with 35 TDs with 21 rushes for 143 yards (6.8 avg.). The 11-year veteran also returned 23 kickoffs for 559 yards (24.3 avg.) with a TD and seven punts for 48 yards (6.9 avg.). He started three playoff games, producing 10 catches for 105 yards (10.8 avg.) with a TD.

The Torrance, California native was an All-America selection as a senior at Southern California. He recorded 185 receptions for 2,957 yards (16.0 avg.) with 21 TDs in regular season contests for the Trojans.
