DEL MAR -- Race #7 -- TALK ME AGAIN (#5)
____________________________________________________________________
Today's 7th race is a turf sprint for fillies and mares racing at the 105
level. Turf sprinting is brand new for Del Mar, and I will be attempting to
"break my maiden" over this five furlong course with today's spot play. I
did notice that F J's Pace took a field wire to wire earlier this week,
which might mean speed is best. One race hardly signals a trend, but we may
have a better idea of this course's winning profile after seeing a couple
more at this trip. My top two win candidates for this race came down to
MARIA'S MIRAGE (3-1) and TALK ME AGAIN (5-1).
MARIA'S MIRAGE has to be one of the quickest fillies I have seen (for an
opening quarter mile). Last time out at Hollywood Park she blitzed a 21.1
opening fraction. She then threw in a 22.4 second turn time which gave her a
pace figure of 110+ at the 107 level. Her speed figures of 110-102+ earned
her a fourth place finish. Since she will be racing for a $62,500 price tag,
she is able to drop to today's "optional claiming" 105 level. MARIA'S MIRAGE
does need a clear open lead to run her best. I don't believe that's possible
if our spot play has anything to say about it.
Eric Kruljac brings his speedy mare over to Del Mar so that she can race at
her preferred distance. TALK ME AGAIN has won seven races from eleven career
starts at this five furlong trip. For her first start this year, TALK ME
AGAIN had to face the razor sharp Grant Marty A Wish. Marty ran away and hid
with winning figures of 113-108. TALK ME AGAIN managed to post figures of
112-102+ while finishing fifth. TALK ME AGAIN is a pace presser who should
be able to gain ground on MARIA'S MIRAGE around the turn.
TALK ME AGAIN ran a 21.8 turn time after running a 21.6 opening quarter. The
raw fractions as well as our pace figures suggest TALK ME AGAIN has the best
chance of catching the super quick MARIA'S MIRAGE. These two should dominate
this short turf dash. I will use a quinella with MARIA'S MIRAGE, but my win
wager will go on today's spot play TALK ME AGAIN. Good luck!
