He's a public figure. Different rules.

now you're making a different argument, this has nothing to do with your statement "his family as a right to know"

I'm not making any different argument. His family has the right to know and he's a public figure. I'm not saying I agree with it but it is the way it is.

Whats embarrassing about it? Young Rich Guy got Drunk and High and went for a Boat Ride. Died. Tragedy is not lessened or made greater just cuz he ingested some substances.

Jim Morrison got Fat, grew a beard, OD'd on Heroin wound up in a bathtub dead. Totally not embarrassing at all and if that wasn't certainly getting high then barreling into some impossible to see Rocks on a dark dark night isn't embarrassing.

Maybe this will give other athletes "pause" to consider?

Yes sir

parents never want to see the reputations of their children tarnished, life 101

as for tragic stories influencing others, how many tragic stories do we need before that phenom starts working?

it's just as likely to teach kids "doing cocaine is cool", Jose Fernandez did it and everybody loved him. Just don't DUI and you'll be fine !!!!!

you'd think the whole world would have stopped smoking by now, eh?

i'd be remiss;

'made them feel more confident in their abilities and ignore their obvious impairment from the all the alcohol they consumed.' This is true

cocaine does NOT sober one who has been drinking. Basic pharmacology tells us that; the cocaine does not metabolize the alcohol and release it from the body. Good grief the liver does that. And that takes time. Alcohol in excess is a CNS depressant-- keep drinking and eventually you're passing out on the couch. Now, to ADD cocaine to a guy who has been drinking? Good grief it gives him a false sense of improved cognitive function - remember its a CNS stimulant !! Makes you feel more awake. In fact, the person may now DRINK MORE!! elevating already high levels of alcohol in his system (remember the body will clear the alcohol out of the system, cocaine does NOT DO THAT). So, I think anyone can see how dangerous this combo can be. Those kids, maybe,never would have gotten ON THE BOAT if it wasnt for the cocaine, giving them the boost of energy to keep going.

and i'll repost this critical line and the source;

'no one can accurately predict the high or heightened state of drunkenness that a person will have when they mix these two'

http://drugabuse.com/library/concurrent-alcohol-and-cocaine-abuse/

and finally cocaine's effect as a stimulant is DOSE DEPENDANT. Just like Adderall (see post #7,8). What happens if you have TOO MUCH cocaine? (hallucinations, aggressive behaviour...).Why was that kid on Adderall driving the other way on a highway that cost his life (post #8)
? Isn't Adderall a CNS stimulant? keeps you 'alert'?

Doesn't change the respect I had for him as a player. Total stud. He was young and made a horrible mistake that cost him his life. I hope young people learn from this.

Adderall (or any equivalent) is body / mind altering and that is the long haul drivers drug of choice. Keeps one quite alert and sharp.

Good note...Air Force fighter pilots are one of many who routinely take some form of pharmaceutical stimulant to help assure alert blood flow to the brain, thus preventing sleepiness.

RICHOFF aptly notes the problems when such drugs are used to excess and move from being a useful supplement to creating a distorted brain chemical balance

In fact, increased public awareness and directed educational efforts have reduced adult tobacco use within the USA by over 70% in the past two decades.

do you have any children?

Yes, they done growed up though, flew the coop, they're around the age that Jose Fernandez was when he died (24).

I do get where you're coming from, can relate clearly to what you mean by "embarrassment" for family though I'd imagine that the sheer all-consuming Grief borne of this for them leaves no room for embarrassment.

The Stigma is definitely less. Imagine this happens within the 1950's: 24 yr. old lost to Cocaine/Booze fueled affair there'd be that "embarrassment" you describe but today?

I do see what you mean though and especially about

respecting one's privacy is in our distant past

I'm reminded again that Marlins bumped his Start back so as to throw the best wrench they had in their toolbox at The Mets so as to deliver the best shot they could to derailing Mets playoff qualification.

"If that start don't get bumped back Jose does not die" went to 100 with these autopsy revelations.

Every untimely death has a 'What if' you can't dwell on them they're meaningless...

As far as the family being embarrassed, are you guys Amish? Booze and coke is not exactly outrageous

If you're embarressed at your kids death then you are a selfish parent.....is just the wrong word

Dissapointed maybe works better?

there is no need for 'embarrassment'. Parents may want to blame themselves, but embarrassment ? 'it's our fault don't measure up as 'good parents'', so become embarrassed? Save their kid's 'reputation' from judgment ...to not have anyone know cause the parent will be embarrassed? One should change mindsets from grossly- ego oriented to a more humble, forgiving, less self-centered-- it may aid in internal healing.

Sandi Zook, (the mother of the boy that drove eastbound on the westbound lane on a highway on high-levels of Adderall killing himself...post #8) decided to speak out and warn other families of what could happen to THEIR kid if they recklessly use said drug. ........... Does everyone know the dangers of Adderall? Of course not. She used her moment of despair as a springboard to try to warn others. How about that?Kudos. Hope she can find peace.
