I think Matthews either bolts or he'll demand 16-17m and screw up the Leafs cap even more than it already is. That's why the Leafs are forced to go dumpster diving every year trying to fill out the rest of their roster with spare parts nobody wants stitched together with duct tape. It's a model destined to fail year after year.
