The Sony Open
Written By Jamie Power
The Overview
Where: Waialae Country Club, Honolulu Hawaii, USA
Who: David Toms Is The Defending Champion
The Favourite: Vijay Singh
The Course
The Waialae Country Club is a beautiful course in Honolulu and plays short as a par 70. Last year driving accuracy was the key to winning the tournament but wont play so much of a factor this year due to the rough being cut down 1 and ½ inch. This course plays havoc to some players games because of massive wind gusts that is always shifting around. The greens are average size and require some skill in reading the greens, putting will also be key this week. The player who can over come the wind and find his putting stoke will win the tournament this week.
Jamie’s Outright Winners
Vijay Singh +590 200 to win 1180
Vijay Singh is in a familiar position this week as he is the massive tournament favourite in Honolulu this week. Vijay is coming of a win at the Mercedes Championship in Maui and is coming into this tournament at top physical condition and form. Although he is 43 Vijay is one of the most dominate players on tour and can overcome any type of playing conditions and course layout. With a straight drive and a hot “body putter” Vijay Singh should be able to roll on though this week and grab a victory. Oh, did I mention he is getting more than 5/1 on your money, that’s a steal in my opinion.
Davis Love III+2240 100 to win 2240
Davis Love III is coming off a 4th place finish in Maui last week and appears to be the only person strongly capable of stopping back to back wins for Vijay Singh. Davis has played 8 Sony Opens and made the cut in 7 Of them with 5 top 10 finishes. Davis had his best finish in 2004 when he placed second. He also added a third and a fifth in previous years.
Head To Head Picks
Davis Love III +123 vs. Luke Donald 200 to win 246
Davis has way more experience than Luke at this tournament and Luke still isn’t in his top form. Davis brings his game this week and Luke try’s to get into a rhythm at the Sony Open.
Vijay Singh -138 vs. Trevor Immelman 650 to win 500
Vijay is at the top of his game and coming off a win last week. After already matching his win total from last season his distance off the tee and now quite solid putting should lead him to a top 3 finish this week hands down and most likely an outright victory. Trevor Immelman cant compete with Vijay but should be in the top 10 after Sunday.
Vijay Singh -115 vs. Jim Furyk 575 to win 500
This is just a low line because of Jim having a better world ranking than Vijay. Like I have said before Vijay is in his “dominate” mode and Jim Furyk is just simply warming up and getting his swing ready for the upcoming season, even if he was 100% he still couldn’t take down Vijay this week.
JB Holmes +134 vs. Stuart Appleby 200 to win 268
JB is a solid sleeper pick this week and after Appleby not even showing up to defend his title last week JB is a prime choice on the head to head. Look for JB to have a top 10 finish this week and Appleby try to get on track.
Will Mackenzie -139 vs. Chris Couch 560 to win 400
…*no comment*
Brett Wetterich -104 vs. John Bohn 416 to win 400
Steal here with Brett only listed at -104. Easy top 15 finish this week with solid putting and driver control. Great value in this play.
Sleepers To Win
Brett Quigley (Field +232) 10 to win 23.2
After a solid season last year and finished 28th on the money list. Consistent strong play should carry over from last year in his 2007 debut this week.
JB Holmes +5200 15 to win 780
After a strong performance last week JB should have a great 2nd year on tour after a not so great rookie campaigne last year. I really like JB to get a solid finish this week and get his game on track and make some noise on the PGA.
