I have played against Poker Bots in Poker Academy Online. The creators of the software play them against the "regulars" to try and inprove their software (their algorithm or engine is used in the new XBox Poker game coming out). The limit bot is excellent and is often near the top of the standings althought the competition is no doubt weaker than some of the better limit games. The no-limit bots are not that good however and are pretty easy to beat if you observe their behaviour - they seem to have little or no randomness i.e. if you bet at them and they have little or nothing they fold. My strategy against these bots is to wager immediately if the bot checks - they always seem to fold. I am sure other bots are different but programming a bluff into a bot would be tough which is why I suspect that limit bots are the only ones that are feasable right now.

Party poker has implemented a relatively new security measure to prevent bots. Basically if a player is playing multiple tables they will randomly send the person a pop up which must be responded to in time. If a bot is playing they obvoiusly will not respond. Obviously its not fool proof.

And bots in general aren't much of a problem. Most people dont have the ability to design a bot and if someone does he can only play a certain amount of tables and the likelihood of any of us sitting at his table is slim. And even if we do its only one player at a 6,7,8,9 person table. It shouldnt have much of an effect on your profit margin.

Back when I use to play online poker I would always try to talk to them with the chat function to see if they would talk back. Bots dont talk. So this is one way I would try to find out.

My main question : Why are people complaining about computer bots? I would love sitting at a 6-man table (love the shorthanded tables) with 5 bots playing against me. Bots are *computer* programs that basically *halfway* learn to counter an opponent's playing style. And since they are programs, they tend to play the same against your playing style; hence, same betting patterns / bluff patterns. So you either A) Learn the betting patterns (pretty much the only *tell* you have online anyways) or B) Periodically change your playing style during the same game. And I may be wrong in saying this, but if you can't Read betting patterns online or Change your playing style, maybe poker is the game you should only play with your drunk buddies in a home game.

The *chat* thing to see if their bots or not really doesn't prove much. I know a lot of players that don't chat at all and most of them disable chat when they sit at the table. I for one don't like even seeing the 18 year olds go on and on and on about the "Why the hell did you call that?" and the "#*@* ... Can't Believe That Bad Beat". I don't disable chat, but I maybe chat at most 5% of the time I play poker. So that's maybe 1 or 2 sentences for every 4 hours of play.

But to answer the first question : Why didn't the *player* bet his A-Q after you moved all-in? Frankly if you moved all-in and there were 4 callers, there's quite a bit of money in the pot. Most players with that large of a pot already are happy enough to check down their hands. Another possibility is that there are 5 people in the hand after your all-in play. A-Q is a good hand w/ Q high showing, but with 5 people calling, I wouldn't be the most comfortable with one pair.

Is that a moonbat in my sites?

I get my ass handed to me on one hand. Person was Big Blind and gets a straight with 8,10 unsuited as hole cards. No problem with that.

I go "all in" on a later hand before the flop with what I have left. Four people are in till the end. Nobody bets after my all in. I lose with my two pair Queens to the same person who also has two pair Queens with an Ace kicker. The Q on board was the highest card with a pair of 7's.

How does that person never bet with his two pair Queens????? It was up on the turn. It was like there was no reason for that person to bet.

Doesn't that sound not right??

just my two pennies worth.

I bet differently, depending on who is betting, calling or raising.

If a person whose play shows that they know the game, bets or raises, unless I'm holding the nuts, my tendency is to call, rather than raise - there's no reason to challenge someone who can do you damage.

If a person who doesn't know the game (chasing and other tendencies) bets or raises, I'll follow whichever strategy I feel will gain me the most $.
