This would make the O.J. case look like he got off for shoplifing a candy bar.

Please tell me there is no way he could get out of this?

Never say never. Slobodan Milosevic launched a campaign for the Serbian parliament while in prison awaiting a trial for his war crimes (see here and here.)

And he won.

Saddam could be back in power eventually. For all of his faults he was a strongman who kept things together in Iraq ... the problems iraq is facing now are similar to the conditions in Afghanistan which led to the rise to power of the Taliban ... it's not too much of a stretch to see a return to power by Hussein as a possibility.

He not going to be back in power because some dips dip thinks that this war was not just or necessary. He'll likely be tried and fried and at least the trial will be televised. Showing Saddam's trial will reveal to the world, in detail, what this man did as a tyrant to his own people and as a backer of terrorism. Don't ever expect Iraq's 'new' judicial system to be soft on Saddam, as it is the Iraqi's first real test to show the world what they thought of Saddam and how appreciative they are, now that he is gone!

Court TV maybe have this on? Pacifist' would hate it if the American people found out a bit more about Saddam. American's would get the Saddam trial on TV and the apathy or curiousity in some may be replaced with anger and hatred!

Lets not forget what Saddam did to Kuwait, no real defense for that. Saddam can definately make up excuses for what he did to control Iraq, however, that doesn't help with the invasion of Kuwait.

Have you seen the charges against Saddam?

POSSIBLE CHARGES
Invasion of Kuwait
Suppression of Kurd and Shia uprisings
Iran-Iraq War
Gas attack on Kurds

(from this thread)

Note that that's just "possible" charges.

Invasion of Kuwait

Kuwait and Iraq engaged in periodic border disputes for more than twenty years before the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. Prior to the invasion Hussein received what could be considered as tacit approval from the United States embassy, who (quite correctly) maintained that Iraqi-Kuwaiti border disputes were none of America's affair. (Naturally, it is doubtful that the embassy or State Department anticipated the level of aggression Hussein would unleash upon the Kuwaitis, but the attack should not have come as a suprise to anyone.)

How is an Iraqi tribunal going to possible convict Hussein on charges related to the invasion of Kuwait?

Suppression of Kurd and Shia uprisings

Does this mean we finally get to try Abraham Lincoln in absentia for suppression of Confederate uprisings?

Iran-Iraq War

This has to be a joke. Iran was the primary aggressor in the Iran-Iraq war, and Iraq enjoyed support not only from the U.S. but from other countries as well. Will the U.S. be tried by an Iraqi tribunal for its support of Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war?

Gas attack on Kurds

They might be able to get him on this, but his defence will surely categorise this as part and parcel of "preserving the Union."

Milosevic committed atrocities that in many ways make Hussein's pale by comparison -- Hussein simply was around longer and more of a household name. And Milosevic is now a member of parliament of the country we "liberated" from him, just four years later.

There is no way he gets off, the US wont let him.
But what I would find interesting, what would happen if he would choose to drag down the US with him.
What if he would say, maybe prove somehow, that the US encouraged him explicitly to gas people
According to US law accomplice can be just as guilty as the actual perpetrator
Does anyone think that US sold him WMD for ratcontrol? In the fukking desert??????

if saddam moves to cali or some other left coast state and he hires Johnny and the aclu i bet he would get off. His lawyer could argue that Saddams illegal oil sales were helping cali. during the energy crisis while Eron and the other Bush cronies were price gouging therfore he gets time off for good behavior. Or he could argue that Big MAcs and George Bush's voices in his head made him do it.

Phaedrus,

By trying him on the cases your mentioned, at least more facts will get out, for those who recognize them, about how Saddam went about "business" on the days of those events. Then the debate can begin about what to think and do about. I initially wished our soldiers would have shot him in the top of the head when he was in that worm hole. Now, having to come to grips with an American attention span, I'm glad for Americas sake that we get to revisit ALL of Saddams autrocities day after day after day... It will be good for the moral of our great country.

I'd say his chances are 25% of walking out of prison someday. He will be found guilty, which he is.

Once the trial is over, I'd say 50% chance that US will cut and run and civil war erupts. Whether Saddam makes it out of prison or not, will depends who wins.
