Man I'm really feeling cruddy about my job now.20 years manning the tollbooths and been eyeing the Head Tollbooth Operator position for some time.I always thought I had hit the big time till I read this thread.
In Massachusetts the toll both attendants working the mass pike are making really good money. It is almost impossible to get the job without some political connections.
I read somewhere that tollbooth operators had one of the highest suicide rates of any job in the US. Something about how that type of interaction with people was numbing and dehumanizizng. I came acroos the Golden Gate Bridge everyday, and I used to make it a point to say "Hello" to the operators.
At least until I got Fastpass, and couldn't be bothered with the SOB's anymore
What The Hell Is Wrong With 17-22 Dollars An Hour (NJ) Sure It Sucks BUTIn RElation To Actual Work Verses 40-50K A Year With Top Benefits Things Could Be A Lot F--G Worse
Working fiberglass is absolutely horrible. They show you what you have to do before they hire you so you will know how terrible it is. You have to handle parts of cloths, dip it in a glue like resin. That shit never gets off you. Your clothes are ruined. You have to clean yourself with gas. I lasted three days.
Everytime I go by the local boat making place I smell that resin mixture. Brings back bad memories.
Makes me buddy of mine had a job laying asphalt here In Florida. He said his feet would blister from the heat. I did concrete pouring for a pool job once. That sucked big time too.
worst job i ever had was working in a steel mill. i lasted there 1 1/2 days, went out for lunch on the 2nd day, never came back.
if you've ever wondered what hell must be like,
picture a steel mill.
