While most of the attention surrounding the existence of Native American-themed nicknames seems to focus on the Washington Redskins’ hesitance to change their moniker, another professional franchise may actually be doing something to appease fans who find their longtime logo offensive.

According to a tweet from Twitter user @CleFan4Ever, the Cleveland Indians are looking for feedback on their Chief Wahoo logo, which has gone largely unaltered since the early 1950s — and was perhaps even more offensive before that.

shared a couple more screen grabs, which show the comprehensive survey — which was sent out to people who have purchased tickets from the Indians website or are otherwise registered there — seeking opinions on all three of the Indians’ logos.

Whereas the Redskins’ actual name is largely considered to be a slur, the majority of fans seem to have no problem with the Indians nickname. But Chief Wahoo — like the Braves’ old screaming Indian logo — is often considered to be an offensive caricature that should be eliminated.

That could explain why the Braves decided against using their Indian logo on the team’s batting practice caps this season. And while the Indians have, as recently as April, said there are “no plans to phase out Chief Wahoo,” the inclusion of these questions in their end-of-year survey seem to suggest otherwise.

I am offended by the 49er logo. I mean, my great grandfather went to California after the Gold rush of 1849 only to lose his fortune to some carpet bagging squatter! Every time I see that logo...or watch an old highlight of Joe Montana...I end up in tears. It's time for the logo to change guys...isn't it? I mean, haven't people like me gone through enough pain and humiliation? Just name them the San Francisco earthquakes or something that won't bring up such painful memories for ME.

I don't know if anyone has come up with this nickname but considering it is Washington DC, it should be...

This discussion has been around since early 80's ... I wish they'd change it jsut to get on with it. A cleverly laid out plan could keep all parties happy, for instance, call the Cleveland baseball team the Screamin' Casino Owners (thus allowing retention of logo) and the Washington football team could become the Non-Caucasian Tea Party-ers maybe? Just thinking out loud here, no haters please

If you know the entire story behind the Redskins deal then u know Clv and the Blackhawks as well have nothing to worry about. The man behind the Redskins protest is a fake Indian who runs a casino that takes in millions and gives almost nothing to the Indians he claims to be a part of. However he is a bigtime Democrat supporter who funnels millions to the Democrat party......and guess who doesnt support the Democrats?? The owner of the Redskins???? Does it matter that NBC who just happened to have Costas rant about the Redskins last week is also in business with the fake indian? Does it matter that a fake indian won a seat in the Senate as a Democrat? Ofcourse none of this matters, the only thing that matters is opposing people who dont fund the Democrats and driving them out of business, either by lawsuits, EPA attacks, IRS investigations and media false stories..
Welcome to Govt control via Mafia tactics.

This hits home with me as my high school nickname is Redskins and there's a debate over changing that. Most want it to remain the same except for some radical woman (and a small group of followers) who is all worried her son, who has American Indian heritage, has to see what she considers a slur everyday. Of course she has to take this over the top filing legal complaints etc.

Come on people it's a part of me.

As for the Washington Redskins why don't they change the Washington part? I find that far more offensive!

Chief Wahoo is more offensive than the name Redskins. It's a caricature that is no different than the one's of Negros in the 20's 30's 40's and 50's.

I'm cool with the Blackhawks since it's a real tribe, and Indians isn't a bad word for Native Americans so that's alright, but Redskins sounds a bit racist when you think about it...

[h=1]Cleveland Drops the Ball[/h][h=2]The new name of the city’s baseball team—the Guardians—sounds like it belongs on the side of an armored truck.

‘Cleveland is a city that has been ravaged by financiers and industrialists . . . its population abandoned to their fate, left to freeze their ass off, standing in the dirty winter slush, waiting for a bus that is a long time coming. Somehow they go on living,” wrote the artist Robert Crumb.
On Friday the Cleveland Indians announced that, starting in the 2022 season, they will be known as the Guardians. It’s a name that would look good on the side of a Brink’s truck. My cousin George said, “It sounds like an insurance company...
