I agree with Christian Troy as well

they are many many good paying positions but at the beginning you start at a low figure....2 years or more of good performance, move up a couple of levels through the company and then you are making 2.5-4 k (when I started most of my classmates where at 1k level...in engineering fields, by now they are all making 3k or more in management positions)

the other thing is, we can all travel but even if we could travel to the entire World visa free ...one thing is travel a very different one is 'work legally' and well, with the economy going downhill worldwide....most can forget about getting jobs abroad unless they are VERY qualified

I think you are selling yourself short...(2.5-4 k)

And I think you can add VERY motivated to VERY qualified...sometimes you have to take chances in your life...

well I wasn't speaking of my own figures in that regard, the names and true figures have been changed to protect the identities of the involved

Totally agree about the motivated part.

It may be 3rd world but I'll take it any day over the 1st world country I was born in. Hell I'd move back to the Dominican Republic over the US. Until you've lived in other countries you have blinders on as to what is really happening.

Costa Rica IS a third world country in the classical sense. The only distinction that separates this fact is the lack of local production consumed by top tier countries early on. However, some foreign explotation did exist in small part due to the early banana cultivation and now in terms of man power you see utilized by companies like HP, Microsoft, Intel, ect.

So currently you have exportation of intellectual property which is fairly strong in terms of jobs and revenues. One could conclude this is a type of modern day explotation. This would further enhance the argument that CR IS a third world country dependant on stronger economies to survive. The other distinctions are factual; poverty, depenance, and high birth rates.

I personally believe the term is derogitory mainly because it comes from the French (third state) who I loath and in part because not every country fits squarly within its "classical" definition.

Really depends on where you are. Many rural areas would be considered 3rd world but living in Escazu with Outback, Tony Roma´s, Hooters and soon an IMAX theatre it sure doesn´t feel like 3rd world.

Gotta think we have at least moved up to 2 1/2 world!

is that your concept of development?...wtf :ohno:

just seemed odd that costa rica is labeled 3rd world, although i dont know much about it.

when i think of 3rd world, costa rica necessarily doesnt come to mind.

there is only like 7 countries in the word that are 1st world. the rest are listed as 3rd world. australia is listed as a highly developed 3rd world country

underdeveloped = yes we are

The problem we've been having lately is that we are on the 'top' of the underdeveloped and under some metrics this excludes us from receiving help from many sources. Some of the EU countries (I don't remember which) cut us off by saying that we didn't need them

When you look at the underdeveloped countries you will see that we have many things in our favor that would allow us to improve

a) much better access to education
b) no army>>no spending on that crap
c) peace (definided as lack of problems with other countries...we do have our big problems of petty theft etc)

we need some coordinated movement that will make it clear that (someday) we will be a developed country. It obviously won't happen overnight but when you see some improvements in 'action' you can foresee a better future. For now, I see us 'stuck' OR slowly moving backwards as some things that were built/implemented a while ago start to deteriorate.

I guess that for now I will settle with a) no wars (unlike all our neighbors from here to Mexico) and hopefully b) less crime

Nicaragua has beef with costa rica every now and than. Usually the Nicas are just trying to look hard but they have had confrontations at the border more than once. in fact its gotten bad before. Troops even came down for a couple months or more back in the 90's I think it was... and like 3 years ago they where holding tico police hostage over there and some other bs for a while...

Third world refers to developing and underdeveloped countries that were not aligned with the United States and it allies (1st world) nor with Soviet Russia and the communist bloc (2nd world) during the cold war.

There isn't really any qualification process to ever get removed from the category of "third world".

Unfortunately the cold war definition of "third world" doesn't really work these days, according to you Switzerland is a third world country :)

Why most Gringos consider Costa Rica 3rd World

1. A Tico will stab his own siblings in the back to get a head, be it at work, relationship, in line at a bank

2. Ticos will rather fuck ya today outta a few bucks, than to earn off ya over the long run. Bars,Cabbies,Women of the night, Street vendors, etc,etc
3. You cant go into a bank unless ya have a hour to kill, I mean fuck one can wait in a line of 3 for 30 + minutes.....Ever notice how much paper is printed/used over something as simple as changing 50 bucks..WTF no wonder they looking for investors for reforestation

4. 90% + of the Cops on the take. Fact.

5. Fast food joints, it never fails round noon, or say round 5/6 they will have 4 registers, but one fucking open........Same at banks, the Ticos are on a coffee break during peak hours, LMAO, they just don't have a work ethic

6.10% service included in bills. So for the most part, the service is shitty, more so than any where else in the world I have been.

7. 8900 fucking colones the last time I had a burger at TGIF's......Thats round 17 bucks.............Now in the States that same burger goes for round 11 bucks.

8. The roads are shit. Smoother sailing if one was to drive on the moon. Not sure why, cause Nicaragua and Panama they are fine.

9. Movie house Popcorn....Shit is nasty, am I right?

10. Gallo Pinto

11. The women take Jealousy to the next level then some..LMAO

12. Ticos in general are always late, work, meeting for drinks, their own funeral you name it.

13. The mothers coddle their boys to a point they may as well were a diaper til they are 30....We all have a male friend there that still living with him mom into his 40's..

14. Worse commercials in the world...........

15. Cajeta....Now they call this pot? WTF tree bark is smoother.

16. Ticos cant drive for shit. Period.....

Now before ya all get ya panties in a bunch, this just applies to say oh 90% of the country. Spent many years there and have many I consider friends, and they always will be.

Like anywhere their are exceptions to the rule. But for the most part in a Gringos eyes, Costa Rica is and always will be 3rd World and thats fine with me

18. Public buses for the most part would'nt pass inspection in Somalia let alone anywhere else in the World

19. Way to many sisters sleep with their sisters spouses, and or boyfriends.

20. Ever see a Tico reach for the bar tab? Think not

The list is endless, be back later with more, gonna go s get hammered now...........Love being retired, and back in the States

This is beyond wrong. I've been in over 45 countries in my life. I have lived in 4 countries outside the US. Traveling and seeing the world is part of what I do. I'd be interested to see where you've been that was so much better. Other countries were very nice, and I enjoyed living in the ones I did. All of the countries I've been to had their pros and cons, but nothing I have seen or experienced had made me make a misguided statement like yours.

Costa Rica isn't Third world

Very much like Mexico...2nd world or newly industrialized

When I go to the US to visit the family up in Rochester I get a lot of why don't you move here, Mexico's thrid world.

Then automatically I think about Mexicans laying 1000 dollars on booze in one of the best clubs in Monterrey enjoying Green Label and sorts.
