the phillies OWNED cole hamels, they didnt have to give him a fuking red cent because the kid is nowhere near free agency.
sure hamels could have went to arbitration every year for the next few years and might have earned himself a million or so more each year,
the issue with that is what if hamels blows his arm out next year or gets hit by a car and cant play again?? HES FUKING DONE, he woulda got arbitration this year and then the phillies owe him dick.
this way the kid is insured he signed his contract, hes getting respectable money and hes earning more money then the phillies ACTUALLY HAD TO PAY HIM.
and then he can go off into free agency and get his big time dollars.
