Iraqi Police Patrolling Baghdad
(UPI)For the first time since U.S. forces entered the center of the city last week, Iraqi police cars were seen patrolling the streets. Dozens of police officers, some of them in uniform, answered a radio call from the U.S. commanders to report for duty.
Residents were relieved to learn that the Iraqi police was being reconstructed and would assume its role in restoring calm in the next few days.
Iraqi civil servants, engineers and technicians answered the same appeal, and were working toward restoring water, power and basic services.
More relief supplies were due to start coming into the city through the ports of Basra, south of Iraq, in the next few days.
Traffic in the streets of Baghdad appeared to be returning to normal Sunday despite the closure of gas stations due to the power cut for the past week, or because the stations' equipment, including the pumps, were stolen.
