I read an article on CNN today about this...

I think the US govt. should focus its efforts on resolving the many issues we have at hand, here on Earth, rather than on sending fellow Americans to the Moon and to Mars.

I don't really see much profit potential in reaching Mars... What's your opinion?

It says only $1 billion extra over 5 years here, which is chickenfeed by US standards.

We have kind of stalled in recent years where exploration is concerned.

Kennedy pushed the cold war space program to new heights, putting up with the astronomical cost, and the inevitable failures that come with this new kind of exploration.

I say it is new because in the old days any old dude with a huge set of balls and a moderate bankroll, could set off into the unknown nether regions of planet earth, and get written down into the history books.
Most of these achievements were actually usless for anything more than the "can we do it?" element. Others were not.
I believe a dude called Christopher Columbus had quite a successful expedition.
At the other end of the scale, The Kingdom of Scotland was virtually bankrupted by an expedition to Panama to try and turn the place into a major trading post.

The problem NOW is that the huge effort required to achieve the same results beyond the confines of planet earth means that the human collective/society has to bear the cost of the effort.
The other problem tied in with this is that we live in relative comfort and safety in the West, compared with say the previous 1000 years.
So that sense of risk and return from the huge cost of dreams/human-exploration in space(the NEW frontier) is diminished.

I'm sure that Columbus had his detractors(its a waste of money guys! Yer a loony! etc), like those who thought the Scots Panama Post project was madness.

Moving forwards to new places is the greatest gamble.
Consolidation on planet earth is the alternative: The stay at home option.

I think its a good thing that previous generations didn't think they should just stay at home and not take those risks.

Otherwise, the world might still be flat, and the USA not exist.

Bear in mind, too, that the Bush administration recently flipped the bird at attempts by the UN to prevent the militarization of space ... in other words, if there are resources and/or land ownership to be had, the US wants to have first dibs. Kind of a finders/keepers situation.

Just like the land-grab on planet earth, there will be a land-grab in space, and the more you grab, the better chance you have of hitting the jackpot for resources and strategic positions.

Nowadays we could send a few thousand Scots to Panama for a pittance in $$ terms, but its too late for those all-important rights of ownership which were trying to be established back in the 1700's.
And the Panama canal is there now. So the foresight that it was going to be a strategic place was correct.

The most strategic position in space just now is probaly the moon, while the other planets offer resources opportunities.

And now, as back in the 1700's, it will cost a bucketful of cash for those first colonists to get established, and they will be at great risk.

What do you suppose is the over/under on how long it takes before a nuke is developed that can travel from the moon to Moscow? Imagine that, having the entirety of planet earth under seige! How efficient ...

I guess there could be some positives stemming from having a colony or a base in the Moon... like ummm.... let's see... well... there must be something I guess...but I am more inclined to wish our government would focus on the issues at hand HERE, on Earth. One example? Poverty.

Remember that a lot of breakthrough processes and materials end up coming out of Space research. I wish they would elaborate more on that when they present the arguments for.

Just another of these "feel good" programs that incumbents always come up with in, not surprisingly, their re-election year.

SS is on the money IMO - with a gaping deficit and an obscene bill yet to come from the occupation in Iraq we simply cannot waste money on this sort of program. If NASA doesn't need the funding for other programs then just don't fund them ...

they don't need to waste money because 'they can'.

Aside from the water purification system, how do these 'benefits' justify the value system that chooses space exploration (and it's military implications) over such things as education, health care, poverty, etc.

Some of the most frequently asked questions about the U.S. space program are "Why go into space when we have so many problems here on Earth?" and "What does the space program do for me?" These are legitimate questions and unfortunately not enough people have been made aware of the vast benefits the space program provides that increase the quality of our daily lives. Applications on Earth of technology needed for space flight have produced thousands of "spinoffs" that contribute to improving the national economy, productivity and lifestyle. It is almost impossible to find an area of everyday life that has not been improved by these spinoffs. Collectively, these secondary applications represent a substantial return on the national investment in aerospace research. We should be spending more.

Out of a $1.5 trillion budget, less than 1% is spent on the entire space program! It has been conservatively estimated by U.S. space experts that for every dollar the U.S. spends on the space program, it receives $7 back in the form of corporate and personal income taxes from increased jobs and economic growth. Besides the obvious jobs created in the aerospace industry, thousands more are created by many other companies applying NASA technology in nonspace related areas that affect us daily. One cannot even begin to place a dollar value on the lives saved and improved lifestyles of the less fortunate. Space technology benefits everyone and a rising technological tide does raise all boats.

One small example is the Hubble Space Telescope. Much maligned at first because of its flawed optics, it still produced better photographs than anything here on Earth. Once fixed, it has produced even more startling scientific data which we have only begun to understand and apply. One of the many spinoffs from the Hubble telescope is the use of its Charge Coupled Device (CCD) chips for digital imaging breast biopsies. The resulting device images breast tissue more clearly and efficiently than other existing technologies. The CCD chips are so advanced that they can detect the minute differences between a malignant or benign tumor without the need for a surgical biopsy. This saves the patient weeks of recovery time and the cost for this procedure is hundreds of dollars vs. thousands for a surgical biopsy. With over 500,000 women needing biopsies a year the economic benefit, per year, is tremendous and it greatly reduces the pain, scarring, radiation exposure, time, and money associated with surgical biopsies.

Below is a "small" sampling of the many other ways that space technology has improved our lives and benefited mankind. It is truly a remarkable list and not nearly complete but I believe you will begin to appreciate the answers to "Why do we go in space" and "What does the space program do for me?" So the next time you hear these questions being asked, you will be able to explain it.

Having read your new elongated list, I could repeat myself. Instead, though, I'll ask how putting a human on Mars can be a serious priority in your country? Do you really consider this to be sound fiscal management or are you just prone to back up whatever your administration says?

It has been conservatively estimated by U.S. space experts that for every dollar the U.S. spends on the space program, it receives $7 back in the form of corporate and personal income taxes from increased jobs and economic growth. Besides the obvious jobs created in the aerospace industry, thousands more are created by many other companies applying NASA technology in nonspace related areas that affect us daily. One cannot even begin to place a dollar value on the lives saved and improved lifestyles of the less fortunate. Space technology benefits everyone and a rising technological tide does raise all boats.

[I'm not generally opposed to space exploration for the record, just exceedingly suspicious of Bush's reasoning for expanding the budget. Frankly, I think he is on a mission to set the US up to own and/or control as much of the world as possible -- it would be nice to think that the moon and other planets would be off limits. This is all.]

support the space program for 2 reasons:

1. like Senditin said; it has historically been an engine driving technology (not just silly things like golf balls either). Many extremely important technological advances that you may not have heard of have come out of space/military research (the Kalman filter comes to mind).

2. it's fukkin cool. trying not to be glib, but busting open new frontiers is a big part of human nature. it captures our imagination and brings people together in a common purpose which I think can be worthwhile

The diversion of money from those who earn it to pour down the sieve of DARPA is certainly unwarranted, as is NASA, the most useless government agency of them all. NASA is the reason we don't have a colony on Mars. When the previous President Bush requested a feasibility study on putting a man on Mars, NASA presented a ludicrous 30-year, $ 450 billion plan that included an Earth-orbiting space station and trips to the Moon.

Something you might find interesting is John Hickman's work "The Political Economy of Very Large Space Projects." The abstract:

A good example of how much better off science would be if taken out of the realm of the politicians lies in Dr. Robert Zubrin. Zubrin's brilliant plan to put man on Mars never had a hope of getting past NASA's D.C. liason -- cheap, undramatic, and utilising technology which we have had for decades, it just isn't the sort of thing that glorifies the national image quite enough to suit the bureacracy. (Zubrin's "Mars Direct" project is now a private affair; its official website is here.)

Like the myth that DARPA created the Internet, the myth that NASA is a positive force in space exploration is dependent upon the suspension of disbelief required to maintain the idea that a good, useful or even necessary idea will not be explored and developed by the private sector, which is ludicrous given the profit potential of "first mover advantage" in any enterprise.

Not really qualified to comment on efficiency or lack thereof at NASA - I'm sure there's room for significant improvemenmt, but must disagree with your general conclusion that the private sector would step in and fill the void if we pricked the bloated NASA bubble...

The computers you and I are typing on right now exist largely because of government sponsored research during WWII and the cold war. The technology that made the internet possible WAS largely developed using ARPA money here in Cambridge, MA and at Stanford University.

The technology we'll be using 5 years from now is being developed by R&D guys in industry and universities using (some) private money. But the technology we'll be using 15-20 years from now is being developed by guys utterly dependent on government funding agencies like DARPA.

Would these technologies be developed without government involvement? Some would, but I doubt most would simply because the capital investment for any single firm (or even a consortium of large firms) is just too high, and the risk is high as well. If this investment in basic research is a shared cost though, suddenly many of these projects become feasible and there is a potentially large benefit for everybody.

Basic research always gets a bad rap because for every big success there are bound to be 10 modest successes and 25 failures, but I think the general principle of publicly funding this type of research is sound.

I know I'm falling for a trap here but what company would possibly want to risk the money/liability of a trip to Mars? Where is the economic benefit for GE or Ford? In this case, where is the "first mover advantage"?
