:modemman: Would really appreciate some wisdom here. Was having problems with cursor and it was freezing up. Got error message that said update with newer addition IE. Called my Provider and they had me take version 7 off and put 6.1 on. Would this not be an older version? Have really been having problems since this was don. Can i do system restore to yesterday and will that reapply version7.1? Sorry for stupid questions, but am not very literate with this. Just looking for some fixes. Have to reboot everyfew minutes. Have all the latest anti spy and virus software and shows nothing.

When you find yourself in a scenario of hardware of software issues and you have no idea what the source of the problem is you need to start trying different things.

If you are having mouse problems, with the cursor freezing that can mean a couple things.

First off, the notion that IE7 is causing problems does not hold much water with me. Unless you are running an ancient machine with a dated operating system, it does not make sense.

If your cursor dies on screen, and you can no longer access your computer and the keyboard is also dead -- you're probably dealing with a graphics card issue.

That is a tell tale sign of an overheating issue with the graphics card. When things freeze randomly and the mouse, etc get stuck - the card is overheating and dying.

Open up your computer and see just how bad the air flow is with the dust. Clear out the dust carefully and then try your usual routine with the case OPEN. The case open and the dust cleared out will give you much better temperatures and the odds that the system freezes due to overheating disappears.

If it's not the card, or overheating it could be a memory problem, or a mouse driver problem. System restore will help if it's a software problem, but the symptoms you are describing don't necessarily lead me to believe it's software related. Good luck.

Internet Explorer 6 vs 7.1

i appreciate that . It is a notebook about one year old. it is running windows xp home edition. I notice the fan going off and on every five minutes or so. I got light suction hose and tried to clean small particles of lint off of screen on bottomof machine. If i do system restore will that bring back IE7.0., and can a fan issue be replaced .

With a laptop, the fan issue is not as easy to replace as a desktop machine. Try and run it in a room of your house that is cooler than where it is now. There is a program called "mothermoard monitor" that will read temperatures of MOST processors inside computers. That being said, it is an older program that takes some tricks to get working. A basic search will get you plenty of information on it.

As for getting back a piece of software via System Restore. Here's how it works. Just think of everyday of the week -- if on Monday you install IE7, which takes the place of IE6 -- and you do a system restore to Sunday, the night before Monday -- it will reset your system to when you had IE6 installed. It will not revert you to nothing.

Imagine the computer taking a snapshot at random intervals of all the programs installed at that current time. System Restore is great for when you believe you have having software problems from a recent install or uninstall and need to GO BACKWARDS to revert to a state that was more stable.

With you having a laptop, does the same issue arrise when only using the trackpad? (aka, no mouse attached). How much system memory do you have? (Right click my computer, go down to properties, wait a moment, and it will show the specs. of the system along with processor speed and memory, etc.) Does this happen when you are plugged into the wall via AC power? Does it ONLY happen when IE is opened? Do you have issues when using Firefox? Other programs? Try and figure out a way to isolate the problem and find out which programs trigger the response. If you get the same response (freeze) from different programs, it would lead to a computer/hardware problem. Isolating a piece of software as the trigger, obviously makes it a software issue.

I'll be back later tonight. Good luck.

Yes i will do that right now. As i think about it, it seems to act up more when i am running off of battery. Also i don't use a mouse , just the pad on the system. The cursor will be fine and then just freeze. Then nothing will work and i have to shutdown by using the off button. it will not shut down the normal way. Thanks will try to isolate

Not really. You could have a bum battery. Seach google, and or keep isolating down what causes your issues when you are on battery by trying programs individually.
