Doesn't surprise me. Like I've been saying on here for the last few years, this guy is beyond bad..But the Illinois athletic department is just as bad for the stupid timing of his firing. Why are things any different now than what they were in January? There better be a hell of a back story going on here..

I would guess that they have been building a case for not having to pay his buyout, or pay a significantly smaller portion of it based on transgressions and maybe now they feel they finally have enough. I think most felt they werent going to do anything this year anyway, so if my guess is correct, it wouldn't matter to them when they pulled the trigger as long as they saved some money.

For real. With the right coach, this program could be a force in the Big Ten West. I heard a former NU player and GA under Pelini say that Illinois had some good looking ball players and there was this disbelief at how bad they underachieved. Sleeping giant is a word Ive heard more than once.

How much of a downgrade do we give to BYU turning to the freshman QB Tanner Mangum? I'd say at least 3 points, maybe 5? Magnum is a PS#8 according to Steele so he was highly rated. Boise sure lucks out here don't they

I thought Mangum looked a little older than your average freshman when they interviewed him yesterday after the hail mary. Looks like he's already been on a Mormon mission and was from the 2012 recruiting class so he's really about the age of a senior, not a typical freshman. Maybe not so much of a downgrade then:

[h=3]Before BYU[/h]
  • Rated No. 1 prospect in the state of Idaho, No. 3 overall quarterback in the nation and No. 59 overall prospect by Rivals.com
  • Rated No. 15 quarterback by Scout.com
  • Co-MVP of Elite 11 Camp and MVP of the Under Armour All-America Game
  • Participated in The Opening, a five-day Nike football event and was named to the 7on7 All-Tournament team after leading his squad to the championship game
  • 5A Southern Idaho Conference Offensive Player of the Year and named All-State
  • Completed a school-record 268 of 393 passes for 3,885 yards and 35 touchdowns as a senior
  • Set a single-game school record completing 37 of 53 passes for 469 yards and six touchdowns
  • Threw for 874 yards and 10 touchdowns before missing most of his junior year with a an injury
  • Academic All-Conference all of high school
  • ESPN lists him as “an efficient, technically consistent pocket passer that is an above average athlete as well”
  • Also recruited by Arkansas, Boise State, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Utah and Washington State
  • Coached by Paul Peterson

I knew this day was coming. The day that Tanner Mangum has a huge performance on a big stage and everyone wonders who this guy is. On Saturday, in relief of an injured Taysom Hill, Mangum engineered a come-from-behind win for BYU over Nebraska on a last-second Hail Mary.We're not surprised by the splashy debut. The last time I saw Tanner Mangum in person, he was busy earning co-MVP honors at the Elite 11 Finals. His fellow co-MVP? Jameis Winston. While Winston was winning Heismans and national championships though, Mangum was on his LDS mission in Chile. He didn't return until this summer but he quickly made a strong impression on the BYU coaching staff in advance of the season.Mangum has all the tools to transition BYU's power rushing attack into a wide open passing game. Mangum has a big arm (showcased by that Hail Mary), he's extremely accurate (completed nearly 70 percent of his passes as a high school senior in Idaho) and he's a leader. The single most memorable characteristic of Mangum though was his personality. The kid's energy was infectious and he was a clear natural leader. There was legitimate debate on whether or not we should make Mangum a five-star in our final rankings for the 2012 class. Ultimately he was ranked No. 86 nationally.That was three years ago. This isn't your average true freshman.Taysom Hill has been reported as being out for the year following his injury on Saturday but BYU won't miss a beat. The offense will look very different but Mangum is capable of big things quickly in Provo.
