But my favorite part of the game was when the guy who sits in front of me, [been a season ticket holder for over 20 years he has] tried to convince me that the shootout was a waste and he was ok with ties in the game. I basically told him he was nuts and how exciting it has made the game and then the game went to the shoot out and everyone in the Joe stood on their feet and watched Datsyuk scored the winner and Conklin stop all 3 of his and the place went bonkers. I tapped him on the shoulder and said...."And you'd REALLY rather leave here tonight with a tie?" He just smiled at me and shook his head. Our entire row were high fiveing each other. He then put up his paw and gave me one.
I've been to exactly two NHL games in the last two years. Both were annual exhibition matches here in Vegas between Colorado and Los Angeles called "Frozen Fury". Both ended up going to a shootout. Although I've heard it related to ending a football game by seeing who can throw a football threw a tire, to me the shootout is the most exciting thing there is in sport.
You mentioned going to a game is the best way to watch a game. I agree and disagree. Going to a game makes you realize the incredible speed it's played at especially if you're sitting down low. However I prefer to sit up higher and think you can see the whole game better from that perspective. For this reason I think the camera placements for TV are the greatest way to watch the game and you never miss a play.
For the shootout there can be no argument the best place to be is at the game. As you said there is not one fanny sitting in a seat. I think that everyone can appreciate it for what it is. If you've played the game at any level you can relate to it fully. We've all played breakaway as kids even if it was only during street hockey practice. If you haven't played the game you can still appreciate it because of it's simplicity. Everyone can "see" the puck, (a common complaint of novices), and no one needs a rule book to understand the objective. Everyone's involved and seemingly part of it. The arena is jumping, and if the home team wins, the trip home is a good one.
But I have to admit, it's brutal to have a wager on one!
