"secede"

And I only do that because it's a very different word than "succeed".

In response to the question, I personally don't believe that any state will actually proceed with a legitimate attempt to secede from the USA. So any such discussion is for the moment utterly moot.

the point, barman, is that states are talking about it now. Were they talking about this sort of thing before BO was elected king? I think not.

Seems more divisive to me. Maybe to you and Gutshot, its more uniting or maybe just the same as always but, you all need to open your eyes.

"States" are not talking of secession.

A handful of legislators in a small number of states are talking up ideas and ways for their states to increase their financial independence from the federal government. But none are talking about removing their state from the USA and forming a sovereign nation.

And to that end, I'm one who has thought for over 20 years that individual states could benefit by weaning themselves off of federal dollars wherever practical.

Creeg, If you are thinking about Texas, forgetaboutit. Perry is being treated as an embarrassment by the major newspapers. He has only mentioned it a few time and has no support other than some total idiots such as yourself.

I dont think rick can win the governorship again and is trying to replace Joe the plumber in GOP circles.

Texas Governor Floats Possibility Of Secession

Okay, I'll retract my earlier statement and rephrase.

"No states are talking about seceding from the USA. A few legislators and the governor of Texas have "floated the notion as being possible". And the general overall response was friendly smiles and grins at such quaint thinking."

We good now?

Im sorry that you think I am an idiot.

Hey, I feel wounded and insulted by this remark. Hey barman, is it right for the punter fellow to insult me like that? I thought this sort of thing was frowned on here.

What will you say when it happens?

"Oh that's just Montana, Alaska and Texas...no real states are considering this. Those people are just racists and radicals anyway. Clinging to faith and guns to explain their frustration".

Ayuh, most of us frown on one member calling another an Idiot. But it's not something with which I'll interfere until he say's you're an Effing Idiot.

And even you're not that bad off.

When one of the existing 50 states actually has a bill calling for secession from the USA reach the floor for a vote in their state legislature, I'll be glad to revisit this point of discussion. Until then, I'm confident that any such talk is just a handful of legislators doing a favor for some of their constituents with no true intent to try and move the notion forward.

but, why are they even talking about it? Why werent they talking about it last year or in 2004 or during the Clinton years? Why now?

George W. Bush in 2000: "I am a uniter, not a divider."

How did that promise turn out?

Perhaps you've a shorter memory than do I

States have raised the notion of legally weaning themselves from the federal financial tit since at least the late 1950s

In the 60s, it was mostly southern states who felt that they were being impeded upon by the SCOTUS when ordered to desegregate public schools, or ordered to remove impediments to blacks voting.

In the 80s, many states talked about how they did not want to see so many of their dollars going to huge federal military buildups.

Concerns about irresponsible federal spending subsided quite a bit during the 1990s as the Clinton administration delivered a surplus budget by the end of their term. And those concerns were resparked in Bush's second term beginning in 2004 - again centering on excessive military spending, though muted a bit by the sitting administration's insistence that this spending was needed to prevent "another attack".

At the end of the day, no state in the current 50 is going to make a legitimate attempt to secede and to declare themselves a sovereign nation.

What I guess I'm trying to say, in far too many words, is that there are likely plenty of reasons to criticize the Obama administration to date. But raising the notion that "some states are considering secession from the USA" is allowing yourself to be distracted by little more than bluster.

When does Perry's current term end and who is the most likely candidate for the Dems in next gubernatorial run?

The only divisive person I observe on a regular basis is punter. His home life must really be bad because the guy never has anything positive to say.

He reminds me of Doc Mercer. They should get together before they die and make each other miserable.

The president of the Texas Rangers during the Bush ownership years. Tom Schieffer, I think but wont swear to it.

His main competition comes from fellow Republican Senator Kay Baily-Hutchinson. who it tired of Washington and wants his post.
