Conservative vs liberal is really about adherence to the Constitution, at least in a traditional stance. Today it's often times mistakenly talked about as having something to do with "party lines".
I can't think of anything about the Constitution I disagree with. According to the Consitution, the Federal government only has relatively few responsibilities. National security, infrastructure, postal service, coin money, rules for citizenship and foreign trade. With an overwhelming emphasis on national security. I'm an advocate for states' rights, I believe in a smaller federal government, lower taxes and fewer regulations. I support the bill of rights. I believe laws should be passed using the legislative process, I believe the courts can only rule on laws passed by the legislative process and they have absolutely NO AUTHORITY to legislate from the bench.I don't believe you get to modify the constitution to serve your own political preferences. You can, however, work to change the constitution.
Modern day liberals look to the courts to write laws for them to accomplish their political objectives. It's pretty disgraceful IMO
I'm as conservative as it gets, using the strict definition of the word and not the modern day bastardization. I may be a RINO, but only because the party has moved away from Constitutional battles on many issues. In many ways, I'm somewhat a libertarian although I do believe in a safety net. Maybe the best was to describe my positions would be I'm a libertarian on the federal level, but a states' rights advocate where the states can pick and choose how to govern on social issues.
One great example, people would call me a hypocrite because I oppose Obamacare but didn't have the same strong opposition to Romneycare. At the end of the day, my position is very simple, State's rights. I'm not interested in imposing my views on all 50 states, each state can mange themselves as they so choose. I'm very concerned about the fucking idiots who work in DC imposing their idiocy on all of us.
