Alienware = Stuff (upgrades) you would NEVER put on your regular desktop.

well yes the emachines is the one for $400, but we get the burner as well on each one, it used to cost $50 more for the burner, but it might be $100 now. Yo uget free internet for a year as well right now.

Actually we also use circuit city as they offer the same deal and sometimes they will give you a HP for that price.

But they are ALL the same!! Only the outside casing is different, inside they are the same

You know what we do with our 3 year old computers and our home computers? We donate them to a local charity and usually get about $500 in tax deductions.

Dell or Gateway is my suggestion. GO to their websites and custom make your own computer. Getting a 3 year warranty is a good idea.

After rebates and free shipping I paid about 400.00 bucks for this Dell with a CD burner.

It's AWESOME I wished I would have shitcanned my old Presario 3 years ago.

Jman-

What is a new "system"?

The more knowledgable can correct me if I'm wrong but, I always thought that the motherboard (which includes the processor) was the most expensive part of the machine. If that works then what are they charing you for...sounds like mostly labor. I would shop around for a repair place and get the old machine fixed. You have a good foundation and if it will only cost you 300 to get it fixed it seems like a good idea.

If you don't want to do that, customize a Dell and you will be set. My guess is that you can get a VERY good machine for a reasonable price but more than 500 bucks.

I have an AMD K-6 300 system that I bought at auction for $170 2+ years ago. Had all kinds of problems even logging onto the (AL Gore) internet, signed up for cable internet and have never looked back!

Buy a cheap computer and get a cable hookup. I cannot imagine how much better off I would be with a 2.5k state-of-the-art outfit.

IMO

I have had good luck with a refurbished Dell. you can get great deals and they will come with some sort of warrenty.

My box was about $700 with free shipping for a machine that is about $1100 brand new.

good luck,
