I know for a 100% fact that I have everyone of them beat preflop .

Should I have called anyway?

lol i just had to laugh at this one....how did u figure out u were a favorite preflop....lol just kidding man

i would only fold them just before bubble in major tourneys if more then 2 people are all in preflop in front of me and i was a very short stack.....thats about it

the other person that said he wasnt sure calling was the right thing needs to check for his genitals.

this is a no-brainer fold if you consider yourself to be the best or 2nd best player at the table. Unless you are unlucky 3 opponents are about to bust out, and one probable maniac will be left with a huge stack.

In my experience these early big stack guys practically never win. Played a game last night where after 10 hands one guy had about 70% of the chips and the idiot didn't even make the top 3.

Its like the WSOP, the early leader is normally a poor player who just got lucky. I've folded AA and KK in these situations a few times and never regretted it, the extra EV from having a big early stack is nowhere near worth the huge -EV of a 50% shot of being busted out right away.

I know they will be lining up to slay me but folding this hand was the right decision unless you believe yourself to be average or below average at the table.

You have no information to go on about these guys other than they can't all have AA but they are going all-in pre-flop on the first hand. Chances are that at least 3 of them are loose maniacs who will see a lot of flops and a lot of rivers.

Assuming one guy takes the pot, over the next half an hour you're going to get a lot of information about him and his weaknesses. When the game enters the important phase with just 4 or 5 players left in, you should feel confident of winning a lot of his chips.

When that stage is reached these maniacs tend to go to one of 2 extremes. They either bully the table like hell or they go into a total shell waiting for everyone else to be eliminated. Either way they are playing poor poker.

I'd sooner go all-in later on when I've got more information and some solid reads on the guy than call his first hand raise when I have no information.

ummm, no. I can't shove my chips in fast enough. You are vastly over-estimating your edge against most players, or maybe you are the best player in the world.

well I am operating on the basis that Choptalk is seeking to come 1st, 2nd or 3rd and win money. Its not about chips, its about 1st to 3rd.

On the first hand he and 6 other players have the chance to do nothing and watch 3 opponents get eliminated. On the other hand, Choptalk gets a 50/50 shot at accumulating a huge stack, which will probably guarantee him 3rd with careful play but not really increase his chances of winning all that much.

In fact what tends to happen with these big early stacks is that they play too loose and slowly get chipped away. They are playing lots of hands so guys like me have a good insight into their weaknesses, and when the endgame comes around I am a big favourite over them.

The answer depends on your approach to the game. My results are 19% first, 11% second and 16% third with an average of 0.35 errors per game.

In general I will have an all-in decision at least once in the last 5 and often limp into 3rd with the least chips of the 3. Once in the top 3 I will start making a lot of moves and mix up my play a great deal, which directly conflicts with my very conservative play up to that point.

I think this explains why I come in second so little. I get a lot of thirds just by watching the guys in 4th and 5th bust out, and a lot of firsts because my play in the final 3 is so tough and I have better reads on those guys than they have on me.

But it's early days, the sample size is only 330 games.

If you play to win 1st place: call

If you play to cash: fold

I'll take the 50/50 odds to either quadruple up or bust out on the first hand any day.

not sure about pokerroom, but had this been on Ultimate Bet or Bodog I can guarantee you somebody would have caught a third 2 or made their straight to beat your Aces...

my online poker career is over, I dont remember what I finished. All I can tell you is I did not finish in the money. It was the $20,000 nightly torney at pokerroom.com with about 800 players. No rebuys

I know what CHOP is saying, this is gamblng, but it also takes skills and you could win more if you're skilled so, I know where he's coming from, he doesn't wanna risk that much so early, so if you don't want to risk don't do it.
But this is poker so you should risk your life in the tourny when you're have the odds in your favor, if someone plays conservative that's them, you choose how you play....
