This is crazy. Last night at pokerroom.com on the very first hand of the tourney I get AA. I was in second to last position at a 10 player table. All of a sudden 4 of the 8 people in front of me go allin preflop. This is the first hand of the tourney and I dont know any of these players playing stye.

I know for a 100% fact that I have everyone of them beat preflop but I folded my hand. This move has really got my wondering. DID I SCREW UP? Even though I had the best hand with so many people in the pot I figured my chances of winning were less than 50%.

Should I have called anyway?

YES

You would be the favorite heading into the hand and the POT ODDS would have been in YOUR favor.

I would have called.

Guesssing 50/50 to win and 4 to 1 favorable pot odds.

Yea if its a standard buy-in tourny you gotta call....if it was a winner take all tourny for a wsop seat or something and you are one of the 3-5 best players in the tourny i might pass...but in a std tourny where you might be in the top 15% of the players you gotta call....when they flip em and your up against AK-AK and 10/10 you can only lose to a 10 or if both K's come..your not going to get another A and if your at Stars i would bet a 10 comes on the river or the flop comes QJ10..at bodog 1 of the callers has 37 and the flop will be 456...but thats what you get for playin there.
The fact remains unless you are 1 of the top 3-5 players in the tourny then you have to call...if you are 1 of the best i'd fold and concentrate on getting those chips from the 1 winner instead of trying to beat all 3 hands at once

at poker stars i would be willing to bet pocket aces only win about 20 % of the time .

i've seen instances where they have gone down 10 or 12 times in a row.

Damm, Pot odds are the one thing I did not take into consideration. I was trying to play smart and I ended up making a dumb move. After I folded I minimized my screen so I would not be pissed at the outcome. Im sure there was at least one J7 offsuit in that crowd,lol. I have a hard time believing that 5 people had good enough hands to go all-in preflop.

It's a shame that you didn't watch so we could see what you were up against. I ran two scenarios through Pokerstove:

---
850,668 games 0.016 secs 53,166,750 games/sec
Board:
Dead:
equity (%) win (%) tie (%)
Hand 1: 50.7667 % 50.30% 00.47% { AcAs }
Hand 2: 07.7344 % 07.00% 00.73% { AhJh }
Hand 3: 14.3981 % 14.33% 00.07% { TcTd }
Hand 4: 18.1289 % 18.06% 00.07% { QhQs }
Hand 5: 08.9719 % 08.64% 00.33% { JcJd }

---
850,668 games 0.016 secs 53,166,750 games/sec
Board:
Dead:
equity (%) win (%) tie (%)
Hand 1: 48.3716 % 48.01% 00.36% { AcAs }
Hand 2: 10.7578 % 10.40% 00.36% { AdTd }
Hand 3: 04.3364 % 03.98% 00.36% { AhKs }
Hand 4: 18.8538 % 18.79% 00.06% { QhQs }
Hand 5: 17.6804 % 17.62% 00.06% { JcJd }

You're about 50% to quintuple up. I'd call, but I wouldn't be surprised to get chased down.

I am not so sure that calling would be a good thing. You have two aces in your hand..and guessing at how people play Ace-X all the time..I would have to say at least one, maybe both of your aces were in play...giving you no chance to improve your hand.

I would probably call if it was a multi-table but a sit-n-go no way do you make that call.

If I knew 2 other people had Ax it wouldhave been an auto call for me. They would have had to have runningx cards or get a strait or flush etc......

The cards I was afraid of is KK QQ 1010 88 hell even 22. You get 4 other people with pocket pairs, the chances of one of them not hitting is slim.

chop - if you feel uneasy with AA preflop and several players already all-in... then something needs adjusting. That was your chance to take a commanding lead in the tourney ! That exact situation is what you wait for. You had a shot to exponentially increase your stack by 4x. chew 'em up and spit 'em out. be aggressive and make them pay for their overplays. I'm guessing you were up against something like:

AK unsuited
AJ suited
QQ
99

If a 9 or a Q busts you... then so be it ! You have to take control and make the most of situations like that. AA is gold in that spot

And so it goes......

That a dream situation to have. Pocket Rockets and players moving all in before your turn to act. Definite call, and then let the cards fall where they may.

I am not sure if this is a dream situation since youare about 50/50 to be knocked out on the first hand. Not something you should be excited about, but since you potential stack size could quadruple you have to call.

However, i wouldnt be worried about the KK, QQ, 1010's of the world, i would be more worried about the 78, j-10 suited type hands that really make your hand vulnerable.

I would think that at the beginning stages of the tournament those kinds of hands wouldn't be shoving. But, since we've all seen it happen, I understand your point. Sometimes you almost have to talk yourself into making the big move: Anyone with an underpair is drawing thin; anyone with suited connectors has to hit the board at least twice to beat me. I'm convinced...shove 'em in there.

I don't care how many peopel go all in before you, folding Aces preflop is a joke. Yes, there is a possibility of you losing, but going in your the clear favorite. Someone will need to get very lucky to beat you, which is possible but unlikely. You are getting 4-1 pot odds on your money, which equals a simple call in that situation..

I don't know what you were smoking to lay down this hand but I want some. :smoker2:

I agree now that the pot odds demanded that I should have called. And I also agree that someone would have to get very lucky to beat me. But when you have 4 someones, the chances of me losing that play where probably 50% or better.

call every time. don't ever lay that hand down any kind of tournament. you have to gamble here. you have the best of it and that is all the reason you need to try and quintuple up. how did you wind up doing in that tournie? you could get rundown by an inferior hand but everytime you win you are in incredible shape. never ever ever ever fold aces preflop in any kind of tournie/cash game. put it in the middle.:drink: gl bro

The situation is pre-flop, and 4 people are all-in ahead of you and you in turn hold the best starting pre-flop hand there is. I think that is a dream situation, a chance to increase you chip count by that much. When the money goes in your the favorite. So be it if you loose after the flop. Not calling is playing scared and you'll probably never get another situation like that again for the rest of the tournement. Take the opportunities when they come. It's not like your making this call with K6..you got the rockets. Again, shove em all in, and let the cards fall where they may.
