Not so obvious...from Peter King's column on SI today:

5. Tampa Bay (3-2): Carolina has a two-game lead on Tampa Bay, and the tiebreaker edge because the Panters defeated the Bucs in in Week 2. There are two games the rest of the season that the teams do not have in common. Carolina has Arizona and Detroit. Tampa Bay has Green Bay and San Francisco. In other words, Tampa can't afford too many more of those Monday night-type of missteps, or it'll be playing for the fourth seed in the playoffs. Fourth seed. Hmm. The last time an NFC team seeded that low in the playoffs made it to the Super Bowl was 1975, when the Dallas Cowboys did so. And no NFC fourth, fifth or sixth seed has ever won the Super Bowl.

drunkguy, your point is well made. An arguement can be made for all the serious picks in this thread. But as you can see from my first post of today a few posts above, I am in serious need of some rest, my meds and closure of this bourbon inspired thread which I began late last night. Thanks to you and everybody else who sent a pick. And good luck to you and Minny, and good to all of you. It's been fun but also mentally draining.

Too much character by a depleted Bucs
squad on the road after the short week to overlook. That debacle will probably proove to be the best thing that happened to them IMO. Quite a gut check yesterday.

TB isnt even going to make the playoffs, and generally speaking you dont get very good odds on the defending SB champs. Too many jump on that bandwagon after a team wins it.

Truth,

What happened is that I cheated and just wanted to end the idiotic thread. I STILL HAVE Not put the wager in. I spoke with Pat on Friday and since he doesn't know a smaller person named Mark and knows I still haven't made the wager yet, I don't think he will mind if he does not get the shirt especially when he gets something I'm going to tell you all about here.

I am giving some financial backing to a local female country western singer and friend named Montana Rae. Remember that name--you heard it here first. Her first CD is coming out soon and I'm betting literally she will soon be known to most all of you. Probably will end up being the best gamble I've ever made.

She has a GREAT patriotic single which I'm betting those of you who listen to country will be hearing soon. I'll give Pat a personalized autographed by her copy of the CD in place of the shirt. The CD has already has been finalized, recorded, and we will have it in a matter of days or no more than a week or two.

I have a pretty good idea of which team I will pick as soon as the lines are up again. Each was mentioned by at least one poster. So the shirt WILL go to somebody.

Glad you called me out on this and was able to give this talented, great little lady singer a plug.

Three futures to look at:

1. St. Louis
2. Tennessee
3. Seattle (sleeper)

The formula I like is about this time of the season, or in the next 2 weeks, pick the team that looks to coast to winning their division that has the best defense. I suppose that would be KC, but the value there truly sucks and I would pass.

Not crazy about this, but I think value is on either Baltimore and Carolina. Since somebody has CAR, I'll pick Baltimore.

fwiw I prefer Indianapolis, but value sucks and I see you mentioned value so I'm guessing you're not taking the Colts

Well, I knew this contest thread was whisky bent birthed, but now it's hell bound too.

Let me announce right now that there is a winner for the autographed "To Mark, Go Bucs! Mike Alstott" size large tee shirt.

I officially and finally made my pick last Saturday just prior to me and Mrs. Jones making an unscheduled and hasty business trip to the mountains of East Tennessee.

When I'm there, I have no access to a computer, have to drive 20 miles on a winding two lane to get a USA Today, the nearest local mid-major[?]metro daily has four pages on the Vols everyday but doesn't even post odds on any regular basis. My cell phone doesn't work properly and I have to make a 3 mile trip down a mountain to call in my bets. The phone in the cabin works only sporadically because of wind storms and tree branches falling on the lines and stuff.

The last time we were there the phone was out for five days. It would have been three but the ole boys down in the holler got pissed and liquored up on the home stuff and shot up the transformer after two days thus insuring no phone service for three more days.

BTW, we were there on country music business and it's all working out much better than we could ever have expected except that I have to send this shirt to the devil in Texas. No not him but....

el diablo registered from Bedford, Tx. is the winner. He is the only poster who clearly picked the Titans. He pick em at 3:34 AM on October 13th. I finally settled on them at +500, on account of we were going to Tennessee anyway, and McNair and Fisher got to within a yard and I think they finish the job this time.

Anyway, arrangements can be made next week with the help of the local mods here in sending the shirt. We just got back at 3:30 AM this morning and I've got a hell of a lot of work to do today to get ready for tommorrow so I'll stop ramblin and wish all of you boys good luck for the weekend.

McIrish, I haven't forgotten you and you'll be gettin a personally autographed CD from what now really looks like a little ole local gal singer possibly making it in Nashville. We hope anyway cause we got a stake in it and she's a nice kid.

And Charlie Maxwell, been so busy and had to do a bit of editing. It goes out Monday for sure. Sorry about the delay.

You will get better odds than the top faves like KC and they have a legit shot. I think the SB will be Pats/Eagles or KC/Eagles.

Thanks Skyweasel,

The pick has been made. I really did like the Pats with Belichek and Brady having already been there done that. Would have made that pick, but the Tenn odds were much better and like I said, McNair and Fisher were there minus 1 yard. Just could be their year.

BTW, I want to thank all of the miscreants who participated in this debacle. And el diablo congrats for winning the shirt. Just a matter of getting it to you now.

I say Carolina if you can still get the 15 to 1 but that should be falling as they are proving that they are for real.

A Few reasons.

#1. They have a strong running game which will be so important in the bad weather at the end of the season you have to be able to run.

#2. They have strong defense and a good ball control offense so when they get a lead they will be able to hold it. I dont think you will ever see this team lose a game that they have a 10 + point lead in.

#3. They should win their division. TB is tough, but they have to face a much stranger schedule being the SB champs and Carolina didnt do shit last year. As a result, Carolina has a much easier schedule and they already beat TB once. This division is definitly between Carolina and TB.

#4. If they win their divison, they should get a first round bye. With only 3 playoff games, you could either scalp out a guaranteed profit ( if you get 15 to 1) or let it ride and see.

But as always, it depends on the odds you are getting. If they drop Carolina to something like 4 to 1 it isnt worth it. I like the other peoples opinions ( Denver and KC ) as well, all in all it also depends on the odds they are offering.

You can bet this off at -600 to not win SB or let it ride.
