real simple here:
if you take up more than 1 seat - you have to pay for 2 seats. it is not fair for me to have 1/2 (or more) of my seat taken up by someone's lardo ass because they weren't made to buy an extra seat. i paid for a FULL seat - and the lardo ass in the next seat over has no right to take up 1/2 my seat and squeeze me up against the arm rest of the next seat over. they should have to pay for it.
i go back to a saying from supreme court justice oliver wendell holmes who said "the right to freely swing your first ends at the tip of my nose." same thing here. the right to YOUR seat ends where MY seat begins.
if you have trouble turning down that 2nd and 3rd helping of twinkies and ice cream i shouldn't be penalized for sweating my ass off at the gym and watching what i eat so i can be healthy and stay fit.
i would agree with you general - but these days the airlines are losing money left and right - and the chance to make extra $$$ is something they can't pass up. also - saying "if there is room" leaves a lot to fate. there are certain flights the airlines KNOW are gonna be full - based on past history. you can't tell someone "you only have to pay for 1 ticket now - but if the flight gets crowded you have to buy a 2nd ticket on the spot" for they will never do it - and when they sue the airline - they will win - and fat people spend more time suing people for "discriminating" against them then they do working out. they lead miserable lives so the first chance they get to turn the tables - they do!

I agree with winkyduck. In the last year in my experience only the early flights were empty enough to allow possible multiple seat occupations by a single passenger. Heaven help you if you were on a regional jet or an MD-90.

I think the economy section should have 3 different sizes of seats with prices in proportion to the space they take up. To be eligible for the small and medium seats your hip measurement should be below a certain limit and the check-in clerk should be allowed to measure your hips before issuing a boarding pass. Fat people are already taking a disproportionate share of health care funds so I don't feel I owe them any concessions in other areas.

This problem arises frequently on the Reality show Airline..which I believe is on the Discovery Channel on Wednesday nights 10-11 pm...the show is based on Southwest Airlines typical and unusual daily occurrences
Their policy on this matter as well as most other airlines is that if a person is determined to be a "POS" (Passenger of Size) then they must buy 2 tickets for the flight (1 additional)...If the flight goes out and would not have been sold out..then they can request and will receive a refund..if the flight was full..they are stuck paying two fares!

I was on Delta flight a few years ago and a man weighing about 400 sat down beside me and asked if I minded raising the arm up... I told him, yes I do mind. I weigh 225 and the seats are small enough without some lard ass taking up part of mine. He went and found another place to sit. Sorry, I like to eat as much as the next person but I have enough self control to keep me weight under control. If you need extra room buy two tickets.
They can buy 3 seats for all i care. As long as one of these fat lard asses doesn't sit beside me.
When i fly to Vegas, I always ask for an isle seat. This way i will have some flexibility should one of these fat asses sits on the same section of seats as i am in.
So far i have not encountered any discomfort.
