39, been betting since 16, father taught me the TRUE art of handicapping -- took years for me to grasp the concept, and appreciate the DILIGENT work required to be successful. i'd say i didn't mature into a successful investor in this business till i was about 25 -- thus, 9 agonizing, immature, didactic years of basically losing.
i'll never forget going to the paddock bar with my father; i was 13 at the time. my father was to the left of me at the bar and he was collecting from the man. to my right was rather nervous gentleman watching pittsburgh play penn st on the tv hanging in the corner.
my father expained to me that his name was red, and the reason he was so enamored with the game was because he had $500 on pitt. i nearly shit my pants!!! now, that really means nothing to me -- in retrospect it seems kind of surreal.
anyhow, my dad bet red $100 that i could name five guys from each team (pitt & penn st) red gladly accepted the bet. at 13 yrs old i was involved, indirectly in my first bet -- we lost i named 8 -- not bad for a 13 yr old. but i really felt i had let my father down. but what really happened was my father taught me my first lesson about gambling -- ALWAYS bet on your own knowledge, NEVER somone elses. he said he knew i knew more than any kid my age, but never expected me to get more than 5, and was pleasantly surprised that i named 8! we went to DQ!
happy b-day mr. Luck
and congrats to you fawv
