Consider these quotes:

I put money before a football team though. If it was the World Cup perhaps I would feel different.

....

If I back Italy to win the Euros then I want them to win the Euros, whoever they may come up against (unless I’m on their opponents for a bigger return). Punter first and foremost.

...

Wow. I’m completely gobsmacked by those responses.

I’m Scottish, and I’ve got a lot of money riding on England to win the tournament, but it’s more as insurance/compensation, as I desperately, desperately want them - and my bet - to lose, as I wouldn’t be able to cope very well with the consequences if they were to win it.

I assumed that most of us as gamblers were sports fans first and foremost, and that’s what led us to sports betting. Perhaps I’m wrong. I can’t imagine many people in England share your views!

...

If it was my home team (West Ham) then I would see my bet as "compensation" if they lost but much like Harry, my bet comes first in the majority of events. Perhaps it's just because I have fell out of love alittle bit with international football. I remember Euro 96 meaning so much to me but I'm finding it hard to get motivated for England nowadays. Maybe it's my age.
