Minor league baseball salaries are often the subject of contention, especially since many are reportedly paid less than the U.S. federal minimum wage.

In 2022, Major League Baseball paid $185 million to settle a federal class-action lawsuit filed by minor league players who sought for minimum-wage and overtime violations by teams. This came after many minor leaguers reported making less than $10,000 in 2021, with teams not required to pay players during the offseason or spring training.

While the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) mandates much higher minimum salaries, players who are not on 40-man rosters and have no major league service time are not covered by the CBA. According to Major League Baseball, minor league players receive health care, tuition assistance, housing, meals, and per diem during the season.
Still, minor league salaries are a long way from the mega-deals MLB players are signing.

The draft picks in the first few rounds are getting FAT signing bonuses.

Now if you're a 25th round pick playing in the minors, its a different story. Probably going to college first

Yeah and that is why Vanderbilt has so much success in college baseball.....

It's like don't over recruit. It's like Tennessee Tech going after a 5 star in football or basketball... They would do better going after local 3 stars.

Are there more farm systems and minor leagues than there used to be?

Seems like it's so much easier for kids to make it in sports these days

Back in the day you didn't have all of these small colleges on every corner like you do today

Sometimes I am thinking that if only I could turn back time I will focus on building my physical sports ability than school.

If you have the DNA and physical traits... YES. I ended up being 6'5" and have a strong arm. I seriously played sports for fun and never had any specialized training..... I always looked at it as just fun and stuff. Like most kids probably. Just playing with friends.

There are rich parents out there that give Nick Bolliteri their kid at age 7 and say " make him/her a tennis pro"... It's true.

Also why I think blacks have more athletes than whites... It is their only option... Seriously, if Lebron is not in the NBA, would he be your accountant? We all know the answers.

Here's the thing. If a kid is a good athlete, then its well known. Names get passed around a lot and its known who the top guys are in the cities and counties.

Our local high school team is one of the best in the nation. Many of those kids have played in our little league. We were able to point out kids from when they were elementary school and were able to see who is going to make the varsity and possible even further. We are now getting kids from out little league who have been recently drafted (first 5 rounds) plus a bunch who have already signed with SEC schools and other top programs.

I have at least 10 friends who have talented kids that play football, baseball, soccer, etc and its been pretty cool following their journeys along the way.

That is sorta of the last 10-15 year thing. It wasn't always like that. I also notice that maybe 90% of pro athletes come from warm weather climates.

I don't even know how some of these academies work.

For football- yes. They have put plenty in the NFL

I was talking baseball. Stoneman Douglas high school.

We had friends who paid over 3k a month to rent a townhome a few years ago ONLY so their kid can play there. Kid went D1 so i guess their investment paid off

I can see the benefits and downfalls to that. It's sort of like depending on your underage child for your own future.

Its funny. I have a friend who's son plays football for St Thomas. He has a shot at D1 (my friend doesnt need him as a meal ticket). Anyways, when he was playing little league football, he played for AWESOME teams. He told me that there were many dads who thought that their kid was their meal ticket.

As crazy at it sounds, if you can make the varsity baseball team here, then there is a 50% chance that you will be playing in college or higher. If you are a starter, then there is probably a 90% chance or higher. We have 9th and 10th graders already committed to some really good baseball programs.

All parents whatever their life status should encourage their kids to find their sports of interest. Every one of us has talent just not fully developed since we are focused to study or pursue other things.

The biggest problem right now is that MANY kids ONLY commit to 1 sport by age 10 which isnt good.

There is a travel league for every sport and many travel coaches dont want kids playing any other sport but that one. Kids will be told that they will sit the bench in their next game if they miss a game or practice due to playing another sport.

My son played in a semi final game a few months ago and one of his teammates missed that game b/c he had a regular game in a different sport. I thought that was messed up
