I think the short answer would be that they extend a certain amount of sympathy to 18-25 year old kids who wanted to do something noble or to improve their standing in life, and just ended up being duped into fighting an unjust war.

I agree with that. I was, and am, against the war, but as long they are there I hope they perform well and 'win' (not sure what that means though) the war as quickly and as effectively and with as few casualties as possible. I believe most Americans who are anti-war feel the same way.

FSB,
Now that the US is in this war, do you want the US to win. Yes or No.

O&U. Does pulling out with an apology count as a United States win? If so, I'm all for the US winning.

This is like a preseason baeball game, if both managers agree, we can call it a day.

And stop it with this Yes or No shit.

Its like saying to someone: "You are in a car, would you like to go North or South??" all the while full knowing that East, West, and 358 out of 360 degrees are all other options.

In real life there are more that 2 choices to most situations.

Obviously you know that's not going to happen. You know the only way we'd leave is after victory or if the conflict drug out for a long time and many US soldiers were killed. I wish you left wingers would just admit you want the US to lose.

Anything short of removing the Saddam regime from power is losing. Which is going to happen soon. Saddam may already be dead or dying.

So if Saddam and his sons are dead, then we won and we are done? Or are there more in his 'regime' and if so do we know exactly who they are and what need to be done? Like I said, I still don't understand what 'winning' this war really means. If you say it's to remove Saddam's regime, then does that have to include replacing it with something else, and if so, exactly what? No one has been told what this will entail, including the Iraqis. Why should we expect them to support whatever we happen to decide at that time? Why can't we tell them NOW what out intentions are post-Saddam? All we say is that they will be 'free', but that is totally amorphou and meaningless in a vacuum without details. The lack of info one this is part of why Iraqis dfo not trust us -- and I don't blame them.

what about the WMD? What about Iraqi democracy?

Does anyone seriously believe that a country with a dictator that is surrounded by more countries with dictators could actually maintain a stable democracy?

Maybe i should have posted only this excerpt instead of the whole thing on the topic "just a little note written 65 years ago"...

radio, stable? No. Israel has a democractic government, but that's an entirely different situation.

As for the WMD's...I dunno, will we search forevere until and unless we find them?

What if the Iraqis don't want a Democracy? Will we force them into it? 'You're gonna vote and you're gonna like it, dammit!' ...and then what if they vote one of Saddam's guys back in power?

D2bets,

that's what I was thinking. Israel, but even so, jewish/islamic tensions will rise. The US should have pushed this peace process to forge a real path of leadership in the world.
Its rare and sad how the opinion and real goals of the US have changed so much, how what the country stands for has been so corrupted.

The only serious politicals that can fill a power vacuum in the country are Islamics and dictators.

The chances are, that to prevent Iraq being a threat again in the future, that it will be broken up into a series of mini-states.

The Kurds in the north.
The guys in the south.
And the dudes in the middle.

Thats my guess.
