What does this even mean?

America had "checks and balances" where people were starving in the dust bowl and during the great depression. There were also checks and balances when there was gas rationing.

Very different time then. None of that can happen now. It's really impossible. You will never see it.

Again, you're saying this from a perspective of someone who has never experienced that kind of hardship first hand.

If our government ever tried implementing similar policies, similar results could be expected. It's happening today in Venezuela (and other parts of the world) and would happen here too if the same misguided policies were applied. I don't know what checks and balances you suggest exist today which guarantee it couldn't happen.

Right now there are ZERO checks and balances.

5. The European system of Democratic Socialism works and it works well. It has some problems, for sure. But it is far far far far far better than our "winner takes it all" system that creates winners and losers and throws the losers to the curb.

:):)

The average citizen in Great Britain lives below a standard of living of a person in the state of Mississippi.

That essay (The system didn't help me! Thank goodness for unemployment and other government programs) is laugh until you cry funny.

Of course guesser would post it.

Wow, that essay is a piece of work. If that clown ever made high six figures I'll eat my shoe.

Huh? The last two republican presidents did not leave the country how they found it. Bill had to clean after Bush and Obama had to clean up W's nuclear bomb.

What bomb doofus? you mean the housing market crash, caused by the Dems? thanks, play again.

Convenient to use this train of thought. Will await your response above when you explain to me how Bush left things in shambles.

Thats odd. All of those highly educated politicians, with their highly educated staff and the only people that can see this are RX republicans. As smart as all you guys are.....you would think the being right percentage would be about 4 percent.
The only people that can see it? Funny, that is typically what you learn in principles of micro. They might be highly educated in one subject, but that doesn't mean they know anything about economics, and they might be willing to do something that they know will hurt if they can get more power in the long run.

The price controls were started by Nixon in 73.Carter was the idiot that started the grain embargo against Russia and that's the closest thing I've seen to full blown Socialism dealing with product.
We had gas lines under Nixon too.

We see it now with outrageous prices for housing in the SF bay. If not for rent controls and laws preventing new homes from being built, prices would be lower.

funny, every time those highly educated politicians try to fix something, they fuck it up more

I've seen those highly educated politicians talk about taxes and budgets, and they're wrong far far far far far more often than they're right. I mean, they're almost never right, never (and I know more about this stuff than every highly educated politician in DC, without so much as one exception)

but riddle me this ole wise one, why do highly successful business owners vote Republican? Do they not have that intelligence you speak of? Or do you actually think they're all racist and selfish? and politicians, or should I say democratic politicians, are the salt of the earth?

We all know politicians make bad decisions but to insinuate they don't understand something as simple as this, and hope to have food shortages and such is just silly.

Yes, we are well aware you think you know a lot about everything ,but as bumps have shown, you're not right very often yourself.

Of course those with money, like business owners, vote republican. They vote their wallet and want to elect politicians that will protect that and keep those generous business tax the way they want it. That way they can keep their employees poor, without healthcare, while they take it in. Why do you think the gap between rich and poor keeps growing? Lemme guess, it's those lazy poor people who want bad lives for their families and free stuff right?

Dems aren't the salt of the earth, I said many times they suck also.....but I will take the guys who suck less over the guys who suck more all the time.

Don't need your money. The Obama Market boom gave me plenty.

Glad to hear you made money in the market. Hope you continue to make money. I don't begrudge anyone's success. That's the difference between you and me. I like to see people do well, from "rich greedy fuks" to pricks who happen to be middle class.

I'm not sure why you use such declarative terms such as "never" and "impossible"

During the 2008 financial crisis, there were trillions of wealth lost. I don't know what you don't think that can't happen again on a much larger scale. Perhaps there won't be people in grocery stores with the inability to buy bread and milk, but I certainly think it is possible to have a full scale economic depression where 10's of millions are without food.

From Utopian "You didn't build that!" class warfare speeches about equality and soaking the productive class, to government central planning, to your food supply being controlled by the military...this is what we call genuine Progressivism:

Venezuela's military has taken control of five ports in an effort to guarantee supplies of food and medicine.

In a decree, President Nicolas Maduro has ordered the army to monitor food processing plants, and co-ordinate the production and distribution of items.

Venezuela is going through a deep economic crisis despite having the world's largest oil reserves.

Basic products are increasingly hard to find and many say they struggle to feed their families.

But Venezuela banned private gun ownership in June 2012. That should have stopped all the unrest and economic chaos. :)

I meant to post this here a couple days ago...

35,000 Venezuelans crossed the border Sunday to shop for food

Imagine having to walk to Canada to go grocery shopping. That’s the equivalent of what is happening now in socialist Venezuela. On Sunday, border crossings with neighboring Colombia were opened for 12 hours and approximately 35,000 Venezuelans walked across the border to shop for things like rice and pasta. From Fox News:
People began crossing the Simon Bolivar international bridge at 5:00 a.m. to purchase products that are scarce in Venezuela.
“We’re from here in San Antonio (and), honestly, we don’t have any food to give our children, so I don’t think it’s fair that the border is still closed,” a Venezuelan woman told EFE in Cucuta.
The woman, who preferred to not give her name, crossed the international bridge with her husband and children ages 5 and 2.
President Maduro had previously closed the border in a bid to stop smugglers (he claimed). With food riots now breaking out in some parts of the country, he seems to have reconsidered. The items the international shoppers bought were not extravagant, just staples like pasta, rice and toilet paper that are no longer readily available in Venezuela:

Sounds awesome, doesn't it? There is a link to a video of shoppers inside the story that's worth a look...

A friendly reminder that Venezuela is so fucked up at the moment that they are also running out of oil -- yes, oil. Would be the equivalent of Vegas running out of gamblers...or better yet, California running out of dimocraps (if only we could be so lucky).

This all started in 2005 when the Venezuelan government seized farms from land owners and "gave" them to the poor. Shockingly, the redistribution didn't work out all that well. So eventually, the Venezuelan military ended up taking that land back (and now oversees all food production in the country). But ask a dim for why this happened, and they'll say it's...uhh, like, the greedy food companies. Or something. That was what their president blamed it on...because he knew it would fly with the uneducated minions who voted for him.

Viva central planning!
