One reason why the U.S. men’s national soccer team failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is that soccer in America is a “rich white-kid sport,” former U.S. women's team goalie Hope Solo said Wednesday.

Solo, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was speaking at the Hashtag Sports conference in New York City. She said the sport in the U.S. is too expensive for Latino, African-American and rural kids to play -- adding that if she was a kid today her family wouldn’t be able to afford to help her advance in the game.

“We have alienated the Hispanic communities. We have alienated our black communities. We have alienated the underrepresented communities, even rural communities," Solo said, according to Sporting News. "So soccer in America right now is a rich white-kid sport.”

“Then we have to ask ourselves, ‘Well, no wonder why we are not qualifying for the World Cup, when we have alienated a huge population of really talented youth soccer players.’ And that’s the state of the game right now.”

Solo helped the U.S. women’s team to a World Cup title in 2015 and later ran unsuccessfully to be president of the U.S. Soccer Federation, the body that oversees the national teams.

She has also run into trouble on and off the pitch.

In 2014, Solo was arrested on assault charges in an incident involving her nephew and half-sister, but those charges were later dismissed. U.S. Soccer terminated her contract with the team after the 2016 Rio Olympics over her comments about the Swedish national team.

And that's why all the South American teams -- all 3rd world countries -- are in the world cup...

Soccer and Basketball are 2 of the most inexpensive sports to play as all you need is a freaking ball and you can play.

The "rich white kid" line is a joke b/c there are some very good travel teams down here that my was son was going to play on. We joked that he was the only white kid out there due to everyone being spanish

Uhh I don’t think she is saying it is expensive to just go and play soccer in your back yards. She is saying we only pick the rich white kids nowadays. I think there are other reasons we aren’t good, not exactly that. But what she is saying does kind of make sense as far as picking the squad. But not many poor families in the states even choose Soccer. They choose basketball and football. But the Hispanics certainly do.

To say she’s wrong when you have no idea what you are talking about or what she is talking about is funny.

I think I was talking to Coors Light, referencing his back yard and then calling her a dumb bitch. I don’t know why so many internet tough guys try to say shit they wouldn’t even think of saying in real life.

come on king of fins...your in s fla...sports are 12 months a year...travel team? your lookimg at about 3K per season...u buy the unis.a ball or 2 for each kid...hotels food.and signupfees...at every one of my grand daughters games there are tables for parents to sign up for private instructions...summer and weekend camps.."rated" travel teams depending on skill...the higher the skill level the further and more expensive travel and higher the coaches fees..then the weekend "tournaments" that arnt cheap to enter and one or 2 nights in a hotel room...in high school they expected each player to raise $500 to cover the team expenses per player in a public school...but it was all cheap compared to her of 2 brothers who were each 12 month a year baseball players. sports aint cheap any level
