Cornell +10.5
When looking at Cornell's season it should be viewed 2 ways; Before Dale, and AD, After Dale. Cornell's plan back fired on them when Ivy player of the year Louis Dale pulled his hamstring and missed the first part of the season. The Big Red were also without another starter Adam Gore. They wanted to beef up their schedule in hops of winning a non conference game or 2, in turn giving them a better seed in the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately Gore injured himself in the Spring, and Dale went down in the pre season workouts. Cornell wasn't able to notch any big wins, even though they did lead at half against Syracuse, and Minnesota. Well now they have Dale back, who will be in his 3rd game (although he only played 10 mins his first game). Dale played 33 minutes in Cornell's come from behind win over LaSalle over the weekend. He scored 14 points, had 4 rebounds, and dished out 2 assists. More importantly he is getting himself in game shape. I finally expect him to be 100% tonight as Cornell takes on a St Joe's team who basically relies on 3 players to do the bulk of their work. That will be Cornell's main advantage. With Dale's injury they had players get valuable game experience, which should actually make them better as a team. They count on several different players to take on different roles, and perform much better as a team. Also the development of 7 foot center Jeff Foote will give Cornell a big man to neutralize Ahmad Nivins. Nivins and guard Tasheed Carr are the most important players on the Hawks, but those are also positions Cornell is strong at. I would take Dale over Carr, and Foote isn't far behind Nivins. With St Joe's 2 best players being neutralized I would favor the rest of Cornell's role players over the ones on the Hawks. St Joe's isn't overly physical or athletic, something Cornell can struggle with from time to time, so they will not be over matched on the glass. They shoot the ball better from 3, with a 36.4% compared to a 30.9% for St Joe's, and have 2 legit got to scorers in Dale, and all league performer Ryan Wittman, who averages 21.9ppg. They also catch a break as they will not be playing at Alumni Hall, St Joe's on campus gym, but rather will play at the Palestra, since Alumni Hall is being renovated. St Joe's already showed they are beatable there after getting blown out by Creighton. Throw in the fact that the Hawks may be a little rusty since it's been 11 days since their last game against Nova, and you have all the makings for an upset. As I said Cornell will look at its season in 2 parts, before Dale, and after Dale, so I expect them to do tonight what they planned on doing much earlier in the year.....that is getting a big win.
