When you pay for the car behind you when at a drive thru how do you know that person isn't a serial killer or child predator, or a rapist?

I guess you can come up with all kinds of reasons not to extend an act of kindness.

Of course you can also ask yourself are these really reasons not to act,

or are they really excuses so you don't have to act.

How do we know that you're not one?

I am very generous around this time of year. I help at the local rescue mission , donate 25 turkeys every thanksgiving. I helped a stranger by buying her and her kids winter coats this month. It gives a good feeling knowing I helped someone.

Sometimes when I'm in the checkout line with only one thing people will let me cut in front of them if they have a crapload of stuff to buy. Not a very big act of kindness but small stuff like that really add up to a lot of kindness over time.

I try to pay it forward but not to the extent of letting a homeless guy live in my house

Although the thread isn't what you have done for others, but more what was received from others.

This time of year I make it a point to support some single mothers. I make sure to visit every strip joint in Providence and distribute plenty of singles.

I've had a handful (both done for me and to others) but one that sticks out. My wife was about 8 months pregnant with our first son and we were eating out and there was a family with 4 kids next to us. My wife even said to me "that will be us someday." I don't know if they heard us or just thought there is a young couple about to start a family. In any event, when the bill came the server told me it's already taken care of. The family was long gone so I couldn't thank them. Now with 4 kids of my own, we have done the same thing a few times, paid and left before they could thank us.

Will never forget that

ive helped more people than have helped me, but the amount of cash i got from someone is an unreal amount and for no reason at all. im talking mid 4 figures. ive done nowhere close to anywhere near that.

i gamble thinking that is going to be me helping people someday for that large amt, but it always ends up me being broke.

if you are going to try to pay for the folks behind you at drive thru and drop the cashier and extra $40 for example, isn't there a pretty reasonable chance that the person is gonna say, that's like half a shift of pay and there is no record....the people behind are not expecting anything so i will just pocket it?

i try to do the little stuff too...let people go ahead in line...whenever i am going to get a cart at a store if a female or elderly person is approaching I always give them the cart I was pulling out for myself and get another one

i also buy extra bfast sammies at mcdonalds sometimes and give one to homeless folks asking for $ at lights....

my first trip to vegas like 17 years ago when I was in college i won like $600 playing bj (was a big amt for me at the time) at the old Boardwalk Hotel and Casino and bought breakfast for a bunch of random people sitting at the counter....still remember being really drunk and happy and watching the doughnut making machine they had behind the counter

Sure, what I do is go to my local places and ask the manager to handle the transaction ( I know most, small town) but I can see where you are coming from

When I was a very young punk and screamed "we got girls that want to fuck us" ala Winston in a grocery store all while the
cashier skipped me and my pack of gum that I wanted to purchase and started ringing up the next middle class white lady in
line while I screamed "hey Im next" and the middle class lady realized that after several items of her items already rang up and it would be easier
to just pay off my gum than argue, the YES

it was an act of kindness on her part even though it was viewed as a time saver on her end.

Thanks white middle class lady for saving me $.25 .

Whenever someone like that lets me go in front of them I pay with a $20 bill and give the change to the person who let me go ahead.

I was shopping at my local market and had to use their scooter as my hip was killing me. When I went to check out a woman took a look at me and ran her credit card to pay for my purchases. I told her she didn't have to but she just walked away and said "pay it forward". I did the next day when a woman didn't have enough money to pay for her food. I took care of the balance and she thanked me!

A few years ago I was at Foxwoods in Conn...I was the shooter at the craps table....I was playing the minimum with single odds.....I went on a hot streak.....Another player had all the numbers , hard ways etc......When I did finally 7 out he picked up his winnings and as he left the table put two green in my rack and thanked me very much....Before I could refuse his kindness we was walking away

I wasn't trying to rain on anyone's parade here. I just think people don't always think the situation through. Like Noonan suggested there has to be a good chance the cashier pockets it. If he does I guess so what as those being generous obviously could afford it and believe it or not I have done a few small deeds myself paying for someone when I see they are short money or driving someone to a gas station and back to their car as they had run out of gas. I'm sure we have all been in bad straits at 1 time or another. I know I certainly have. Sometimes you feel like nobody cares and then someone will surprise you. I actually do believe an occasional kindness to someone who needs it is good for one's own soul.

Understandable, but sometimes people may be looking for a reason not to help out. I believe in Karma......If I give a Dunkin Donuts manager $25 and ask her to run it out but instead she pockets it.....OK, I'll probably never know about it and I believe that Karma will get her with something else and even it all out. But to not do something nice in the event that all angles weren't covered against potential misdoings is just too convenient not to do something nice at all (IMO).
