donk_enby had originally intended to grab data only from the day of the Capitol takeover, but found that the poor construction and security of Parler allowed her to capture, essentially, the entire website. That ended up being 56.7 terabytes of data, which included every public post on Parler, 412 million files in all—including 150 million photos and more than 1 million videos. Each of these had embedded metadata like date, time and GPS coordinates—unlike most social media sites, Parler does not strip metadata from media its users upload, which, crucially, could be useful for law enforcement and open source investigators.

The data is currently being processed and should be available to browse in a couple days, according to donk_enby. Early archives of it are already cropping up as torrent files and are being shared on IRC channels and different git sites. One of the hosters posted this message on their website: "the files were shared from this site, and made into a torrent file so the distribution is mostly out of my hands now," they said. "the data has also been shared with researches and archival organizations." Metadata archives have been uploaded and new scripts have been written to help parse and plot the data.

LOL @ all you dumb fucks on social media!! :):) Parler is about to be publicly pantsed hahahahahah

A screenshot she posted from a group named the North Central Florida Patriots called out her Twitter handle and named her “the rat running the operation”:

“Bad news. Left extremists have captured and archived over 70TB of data from parler severs. This includes posts, personal information, locations, videos, images etc.

The intent is a mass dox and a list to hold patriots “accountable”. It is too late to scrub your data, and its already archived. There is nothing you can do to prevent whats already happened. All you can do is prepare for the fallout.”

Parler has since registered their domain with Epik, a service that hosts other similar platforms used by far-right grou
ps like Gab and 8chan, and are now suing Amazon).

What do you think most social media is? Left to far left
This idea that some far right groups are somewhere therefore it should be shut down is ironic
Too funny

Coding mess

A key reason for her success: Parler’s site was a mess. Its public API used no authentication. When users deleted their posts, the site failed to remove the content and instead only added a delete flag to it. Oh, and each post carried a numerical ID that was incremented from the ID of the most recently published one.

The rookie code made it easy to automate the scraping, as this script used by donk_enby’s archival team demonstrates. As a result, massive numbers of posts that discussed the insurrection before, during, and after it was carried out will be preserved indefinitely so that they’re available to researchers, journalists, prosecutors, and others.

Another amateur mistake was Parler’s failure to scrub geolocations from images and videos posted online. Sites like Twitter and Google routinely remove such metadata from content posted by their users. The video files hosted on Parler, by contrast, were “raw,” meaning they still contained this information.

Parler’s moderation policies—even more lax than those of Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube—already made the site popular with far-right users looking for a forum to discuss debunked conspiracy theories. With Twitter permanently banning Trump, the president’s supporters embraced the site even more enthusiastically.

Prosecutors are already pursuing more than 150 suspects in Wednesday’s riot. The preservation of some 80TB of Parler posts, including more than 1 million raw video files, may result in more people being charged.

****

Failure to scrub geolocations is a biiiiiiiiig fucking problem for anyone who posted pictures/videos to Parler under the guise of anonymity.

Good luck with the feds!!! :):) :):) :):)

I think that if the administration of the site were more intelligent, they'd have tracked down this hacker or group of hackers long ago. Even the Anonymous faction might be involved. Sometimes they do things for fun. So I sometimes think they can hardly be called Robin Hoods. By the way, if I were the Parler owner, I'd try to recover the data and find the trail of these rats. It's funny how big corporations sometimes don't know how to hire a hacker. And I also want to add that any site should do a good job on data encryption and cybersecurity to avoid such big leaks or deletions. Sometimes sites hire professional hackers to find holes in the website's security and suggest solutions to the problem.
