Its probably because the smart phone has been able to video real time injustices. 20 years ago you didn't see it visually. It becomes more personal to groups that are victims of injustice by being able to see it. They now think it could easily be them that gets shot dead for a small or no infraction at all.
So so what changed it? Media and iPhones.

the single biggest difference was the election of an African American president. He was supposed to be that beacon of light, he was supposed to be that example of how anything is possible in this country no matter your race or religion or gender.
