Flying Wolf:
That is the first time I have ever heard Clemente referred to as 'pretty good'. 3000 hits and best fielding right fielder history. Led team to two 7-game World SeriesChamionships with glove and bat and hit in all 14 games.
And this in a time when there were almost no other Latin players or coaches in bigs. Over-coming language and cultural barriers that were almost as difficult as what Jackie Robinson experienced(in some ways more difficult because of language difference).
Honus Wagner is a good choice , too, but 'pretty good' referring to Roberto is ridiculous.

We are generally discussing incredibly great players here, so that's why I used pretty good.

I stick with my Bonds:Ichiro::Wagner:Clemente analogy. MVP vs. All-Star, All-Time Great vs. Hall of Famer.

Wow, 71 posts and not one mention of Dick Groat. Maz hits one freakin' homer and he gets mentioned? Groat led the league in hitting in '60, and oh by the way was named MVP that year. And baseball wasn't even his best sport.

Groat, while the glue of the Pirates of that era, also was a two-time All-American in B-ball at Duke. He would have played football too, but Branch Rickey, commish at the time, pressured him into one sport. Also a great golfer, and even ice skater. And all that, while serving two years in the military in his prime.

Oh, and Larry Holmes is the "Easton Assasin", not the "Pittsburgh Assassin".
