"Greatest American Band"

Damn, that is very broad! I take it you meant 'rock band.'

Other than rock:

Duke Ellington and his band?

Aerosmith *is* a good rock band choice.

I will go back a bit... Allman Brothers, pre- motorcycle accident.

Boys,

I know I'm prejudiced being from the South and all, but how can you all not include Lynyrd Skynyrd in this discussion?

Aerosmith is great,Steven Tyler is a wild man even at his age. However the king of all rock band has to be Led Zepplin. They are the Ali of rock and roll IMO

Gimme Three Steps

(Allen Collins - Ronnie VanZant)

I was cutting the rug
Down at a place called The Jug
With a girl named Linda Lu
When in walked a man
With a gun in his hand
And he was looking for you know who.
He said, "Hey there fellow,
With the hair colored yellow,
Watcha tryin' to prove?
'Cause that's my woman there
And I'm a man who cares
And this might be all for you."

I was scared and fearing for my life.
I was shakin' like a leaf on a tree.
'Cause he was lean, mean,
Big and bad, Lord,
Pointin' that gun at me.
I said, "Wait a minute, mister,
I didn't even kiss her.
Don't want no trouble with you.
And I know you don't owe me
But I wish you'd let me
Ask one favor from you."

(Chorus)
"Won't you give me three steps,
Gimme three steps mister,
Gimme three steps towards the door?
Gimme three steps
Gimme three steps mister,
And you'll never see me no more."

Well the crowd cleared away
And I began to pray
As the water fell on the floor.
And I'm telling you son,
Well, it ain't no fun
Staring straight down a forty-four.
Well he turned and screamed at Linda Lu
And that's the break I was looking for.
And you could hear me screaming a mile away
As I was headed out towards the door.

(Chorus)

Queen, Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith... best 'rock' bands in my opinion (if you consider queen a rock band, which really they weren't)

of course some arn't american.

lets see american....

60's Hendrix
70's Led Zepplin
80's Aerosmith
90's Nirvana
00's TBD there arn't many even mediocre bands out there now... Queens of the Stone Age kinda put out something that was completely different than the rest in my opinion. though I don't know if they are american.

For American bands I would have to put Hendrix at the top.Amazing how he influenced and wrote so many songs in such a short span. It's a shame he threw it all away as I think he was just coming into his own really.

I like Aerosmith, but quite frankly, the one time that I saw them in concert, Dokken's opening set blew what was to come off the stage..no sh!t!

Toys In The Attic and their other early works destroy all this soft-rock ballad fluff they've put out in the 90s and 00s to bits.

P.S. Jate, the 80s were Aerosmith's dormant decade(broke up, rehab, and had Joe Perry Project, reunited in '89,etc..), it definitely wasn't their decade(Van Halen, The Replacements,REM,etc..topped the 80s).
