I must admit, a lot of the cheering appeared a bit disingenuous. But then again, so is Disney World and it successfully entertains the masses. Overall, this was a huge project that was executed and delivered very impressively. There are few places in the world that could duplicate what Beijing did and they deserve the props.
I completely missed the opening ceremonies. But like many of you I watched it moreso than previous years dating back to the 84 Los Angeles Olympics. Watched alot of swimming, track, b-ball, and rowing. I'm trying to milk as much of the closing as possible.

You know, in retrospect, after watching the WORLD SPECTACLE that China put on, I doubt I'll have much interest watching the Summer games in London. I'll probably go on another olympic viewing drought yest again.

I agree with the rest of you, great olympics. China did a great job with everything. When I was young in the 80's early 90's I was into the olympics, but that interest had dided for the past 16 + years since the original Dream Team. I didn't give a crap about this years either until I started catching bits an pieces and really got into it again. The phelps, bolt story lines certainly helped as well.

Nice post. You connect gas prices and population explosion (duh, China has been whipped by US christian right for decades because of their efforts in dealing with human population explosion- same subliminal connection to the scare tactics in the US health care debates about loss of choice of doctors as if choice of doctors matters a rats ass when you have no insurance and no health care) to Beijing Olympics. What we really need is more Texas Wisdom to guide our country into deeper 53 Trillion falling dollar debt under a military economy and a failed school system (28th ranked among western countries) and crumbling violent infrastructure. Pollution and Tibet are huge challenges facing China (US Bush Admin Corporate profit Conservative republicans leverage off the China to dodge serious global warming issues that pollute our future). These last eight years, we have had enough of 'don't mess with Texas' wisdom. I'll save my 'Fs' for future posts and yield the balance of my time back to the World Socialist Website - you want to read nonpantywaist journalism, then read.
