The New York Giants are granting quarterback Daniel Jones' request to be released, the team announced Friday.
Giants president John Mara said the sides mutually agreed that it "would be best for him and for the team" to move on.
"Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way," Mara said in a statement. "His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out."
Jones would have to go through waivers, though it is unlikely a team would pick up rest of the four-year, $160 million contract he signed in March 2023. The Giants would have been on the hook for $23 million should Jones sustain a serious injury and not be able to pass a physical early next year. It was a risk the Giants were not willing to take.
New York will take on more than $20 million in dead money with the move.
The Giants decided to bench Jones during their bye week. Jones addressed the decision Thursday, expressing regret for not producing enough victories while also saying he was still processing his future.
"There have been some great times, but of course we all wish there had been more of those," Jones said in a statement. "I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. Nobody wanted to win more games worse than me and I gave everything I had on the field and in my preparation. Of course, this season has been disappointing for all and of course I wish I could have done more. I'm 100% accountable for my part. I did not play well enough consistently enough to help the team get results.
"The reality of the NFL is it's hard to win games. It requires consistent performance for everyone involved. We didn't do that well enough, so the idea to change something happens and I understand. I love the game, I love being part of the team. I'm excited for the next opportunity. I know there is a lot of good football in front of me and I'm excited about that."
Tommy DeVito will make his first start of the season Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DeVito won three games as a starter in 2023.
Jones had been the Giants' starting quarterback for much of the past six years, leading New York to the playoffs and a wild-card win in 2022. But he had eight touchdown passes with seven interceptions this season for the 2-8 Giants and was 3-13 as the starter since signing his new contract.
"We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him," Mara said. "We wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Another monster QB contract ends in disaster. Way too many to count in the NFL.

Another travelling clown road show..

This time the Joe Schoen-Brian Daboll Can-Am Connection from Buffalo to the Big Apple.

One fluke winning season had these two fools believing the tandem of Saquon-Jones were solid building blocks that would make the Giants a consistent playoff team for years to come.

What happened?

After foolishly opening the vault for Jones, Saquon demanded to be paid and ended up walking for nothing. As for Jones, the headline speaks for itself.

Dumb and Dumber.

Brian Daboll was always overrated in Buffalo by all the so-called "analysists" who credited him with Allen's success.. Now he's 2-8 exposed in NY looking like hot garbage.

Not to mention, a total ASSHOLE toward his staff and players.

What a dumpster fire in NY.

That's a class statement by Jones.

Did he get paid too much? For sure.

But the team around him never helped him get over the top.

He's not a great QB. But there are worse starting in the NFL.

He’s definitely one of the worst starting QBs in the league

As far as full time starters go

He had way too long of a leash

Some one will pick him up obviously not with that baggage contract but your a contender can’t hurt to have him as a backup compared to some of these squids

Malik Nabers looked like he just came from a funeral the first day he showed up in camp to meet and greet Daboll & Jones.

Players always know.

Mac Jones has a job. Think he turned it over three times in a blowout loss in his only start

Maybe Jerry jones will sweep him up just in time for thanksgiving

Love it, Daniel Jones to the Cowboys and then he fucks up the Giants just like Barkley did

They obviously sold their soul to the devil with Eli, just like the Jets did with Joe Willie. It's a NY state of mind

On a sidebar, Richie99 a Jets fan, hates Namath because of how he has ruined his football life. Made him a Jets fan back in 1969

Sources: Daniel Jones expected to opt for playoff contender.

Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is expected to clear waivers Monday and have a new home on a one-year deal sooner rather than later, league sources told ESPN.
No team is expected to claim the balance of Jones' contract -- $11,833,333 for this season in addition to the $23 million in injury guarantees for after this season -- making him officially free to sign with another team after 4 p.m. ET on Monday.
Jones, who was officially waived Saturday by the Giants, is expected to have multiple options but likely will prefer to finish this season on a playoff-contending team, where he will be involved in big games, rather than going to a meandering quarterback-needy team not remotely in playoff contention, according to sources.
Multiple playoff-contending teams are likely to inquire about Jones and his level of interest, but it will not be long before Jones is finishing out the season somewhere other than New York.
New York announced its intention to part ways with Jones on Friday, ending the former first-round draft pick's stint with the Giants after five-plus seasons. Giants owner John Mara said in a statement that the organization and Jones "mutually agreed" that the move "would be best for him and for the team."
Once the Giants informed Jones earlier this week that they were benching him, events surrounding the quarterback happened quickly.
Jones effectively was no longer on the depth chart because the Giants would not take any risk of an injury, with Tommy DeVito as their starter, Drew Lock as the backup and the newly signed Tim Boyle at third string.
Jones took individual reps and even helped out the squad when he played scout-team safety in practice Thursday during a walk-through, before asking for and being granted his release Friday.
None of this should have been overly surprising; similar scenarios unfolded four times in the NFL over the past two seasons before the Giants' turn with Jones this week.
Last season in Denver, the Broncos benched Russell Wilson before he could potentially suffer an injury and trigger a $37 million guarantee for 2024.
Also last season, the Raiders benched Jimmy Garoppolo rather than risking an injury to the quarterback, which could have guaranteed an additional $11.25 million that would have been due this season.
In 2022, the Colts benched Matt Ryan in October, decreasing the risk of having to pay the veteran quarterback a $7.5 million roster bonus in March 2023.
Later that year, the Raiders benched Derek Carr to avoid his $32.9 million salary for the 2023 season and $7.5 million of his 2024 salary becoming guaranteed if he suffered a significant injury.
Now Jones and the Giants have expedited their divorce, freeing the quarterback to find a new home next week. One team unlikely to pursue Jones right now is the Eagles, who already signed former Giants running back Saquon Barkley.
Barkley was selected second overall by the Giants in the 2018 draft -- one year before New York used the No. 6 pick on Jones. The two-time Pro Bowler said he has been in contact with his former teammate and knows there are bright days ahead for Jones.
"Our friendship has stayed close throughout the whole process of me being here," Barkley told reporters Friday. "It sucks to see how everything went down for him over there. I've got nothing but great things to say about him. You're not going to really find anybody that can say negative things about him.
"It's the NFL. Hopefully, wherever he ends up next, they're going to get a guy who come in and work. It didn't work for me over there, and I'm doing well over here. Hopefully, he can find the same fresh start and success."

QB Daniel Jones clears waivers, becoming free agent.

Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones officially cleared waivers Monday and is now an unrestricted free agent.
Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Jones prefers to sign with a playoff contender, and potential destinations include the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings.
For a team to have plucked Jones off waivers, it would have had to claim the balance of his contract -- $11,833,333 for this season in addition to the $23 million in injury guarantees for after this season.
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell on Monday was asked if the team had interest in Jones.
"I'm not going to really get into that today, but I will say tons of respect for Daniel Jones as a player and a person," O'Connell said. "Got to know him through the draft process years ago. I'm sure now that he's a free agent and there's probably a ton of league-wide interest in him, Daniel is going to make the decision that is best for him and his career moving forward, and I'm sure he's working through that process right now.
But I really can't get into too much about any short-term or long-term. I can just say that I've bene a big fan of Daniel's for a long time and I hope wherever his next step takes him, it's a good opportunity for him."
New York announced its intention to part ways with Jones on Friday, ending the 2019 first-round pick's stint with the Giants after five-plus seasons. Team owner John Mara said in a statement that the organization and Jones "mutually agreed" that the move "would be best for him and for the team."
Jones effectively was no longer on the depth chart because the Giants would not take any risk of an injury, with Tommy DeVito as their starter, Drew Lock as the backup and newly signed Tim Boyle at third string.
Jones took individual reps and helped the squad when he played scout team safety in practice Thursday during a walk-through before asking for and being granted his release Friday.
He spent six seasons with the Giants, mostly as the franchise quarterback. He was the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL draft out of Duke. He finished with a 22-44-1 record and 70 touchdown passes as well as 47 interceptions.
