I can't stand people that are in unions. The damn prices are so high because of the wages people steal by being in the unions. How many people in union paying jobs flip coins with co-workers into who is going to do the job for the 1st 4 hours and who will do the last 4 hours before you go home? Thius crap goes on everywhere.
The work that union people do SUCK raw.Look the OVER priced products in our world today!. Why the hell should a american car go for over 25,000 dollars and won't last 10 years without major problems. The workmanship of all products built by union people SUCK big time. The damn newspapers should never have mistakes in it with all the TOP wages and benefits that the union people get to produce the paper.BREAK THE UNIONS OR BOYCOTT THE UNIONS SO PRICES CAN COME DOWN!
Look at FORD PRODUCTS! Garbage and not safe vehicles with recalls every other week.Chrysler products another example of UNION sh*t.Big warranties for what? Because they need it because the payments will out live the car.
Once the UNIONS are gone and the UNION boys fall down to the real world and see how hard it is to make a honest buck, then they won't strut their big chest like a big shot and sound off about union this and that.
Is there any product built by a union that is worth the dollar today?
Boycott unions to bring down prices and them to the bottom!

How can white collar workers be raping America, when "your union boss" gives a INFLATED price to do the job? If a non-union worker is going to perform a job at a less of price compared to a union worker, how can you justify the price to do the job? White collar people are NOW paying the WAGES of blue collar union people.Maybe the white collar Americans should stop using union or blue collar workers so they are not OVER-CHARGED like what is going on today in America.
White collar people are underpaid.Just ask your doctor because union or blue collar people are suing white collar doctors for malpractice everyday all year long.

Captain,

You are dead on about unions. Every heavily unionized industry will eventually sh_t the bed. Look at the steel, airline and automotive industries. Unfortunately lousy managements lead to the creation of these unions.

What goes up must come down, isn't that what mama said?

How are the truck teamsters doing today?

Boycott these unions! The slogan is why pay retail when you can pay wholesale.Any moron can pay retail.Don't you be the next moron.
Happy motoring Motionless Motown.
A Ford product is built like toilet paper.
Ford is Scott tissue vs. the competition that is Cottonelle.

You want quality people right? So start today and think before you hire somebody to do a job for you or before you buy a piece of OVER-PRICED metal called a Taurus,Escape,Sable, or anything made by unions.Things that are made by union workers are ALWAYS put together with one eye closed and are made not to last.

Sure lets go back about 60 years and let these blue collar guys fall over dead in the factory. Then we will replace them and the then work them to death for nothing. Come on, its there for a reason. Unions may not be the best thing but you come up with a better solution. The companies are certainly not going to police themselves.

Go back 60 years, hell we can go back 3 weeks. For example a guy 25 years old in the union working, how did he get in? Just applied for the job and got in? Don't think so.60 years ago his great grandfather worked there, then 30 years ago his old man worked there, and today dumber than ever the kid is in the union, stealing just like his old man.Who flipping the coin?

I got tails. It is closed corporation.Who needs them?

Don't buy union ........ right don't by china. Eventually we won't have to worry about unions because all of America will be offshored in India, china and Russia. No taxbase left and this country will be overrun with urban plight

unions only make up about 8% of the work force in america.. it is slowly coming down from about 15% 10 years ago. unions are dinasaurs..60 years ago you didnt have government regulations that yo have today. today you have regulations plus unions which drive prices higher then inflation. most unions are government workers. see how great the DMV works..

It's Ralphs and the contract ends at Midnight October 5th. Won't last that long anyway as a prolonged strike would hurt the profits of the grocery companies as SoCal is the most important district for them and their stocks are hurting anyway. Have fun and leave your hair net at home.

so in what way do you suggest co workers organise and struggle for their collective interests, such as job security, pension plans, decent wages and health care, or shouldn't they at and leave it up to the good will of their bosses?

JackDee,

I won't speak for captain but I'm not necessarily for or against unions. What I hate is that some of these unions are just as crooked as the employer and while I've never been behind the scenes during negotiations I'm sure that there are kickbacks for the union to compromise on certain issues. If you sell me out or are of no use to me then why should I pay you the union initiation fee plus 9 percent of my pay.

A lot of people I know that favor a union live hand to mouth as it is and wouldn't last a month on strike pay if it came to that and I sincerely hope it doesn't.

Granted I don't look at the union's expense reports but if there isn't another strike why can't the strike pay be 100%. They won't give me a satisfactory answer to this. If less than 5% go on strike at any time they should be able to cover full pay with the other members contributions. Another question that never gets answered is the pay scale for anyone that works for the union. I pay their salary(whatever that is) and I feel entitled to know since I'm paying for it.

your questions/qualms about unions are well justified. Unions might be crooked, but most of the times they are so because the big $$$ of corporate america is buying them off, or because they are prone to the same human indecency that mars corporate america too. All in all union's are an integral part of both capitalism and the u.s. because they work as a safety switch for both. btw, "initiation fee" is only for "societal" america, not unions, just a fee, no initiation.
