I believe its goal is to deter and punish. Neither of which it is doing with any sort of effectiveness.

Deter? No, not it's purpose. Punish but not effective? I'd say all those that have died as a result of the death penalty have not committed anymore crimes. That's pretty damn effective.

You are right. Deter can be interpreted as the fear of committing a crime because of the consequences. Maybe Enfuego is looking at it from that point of view

I'm in the justice for the family camp. I'm not a proponent of the death penalty because I think life in prison is a harsher penalty. Nothing makes me sleep better at night than knowing Scott Peterson is looking over his shoulders every second of the 30 minutes he gets out of his cell every day. The rest of the 23 1/2 hours is in segregated housing with people screaming at his candy ass.

Yeah, I agree.

25 years on death row before executed is not effective at all.

I respect his opinion. Not everyone is in favor of it. I'm against abortion, a lot of people are for it. I won't ever condemn anyone for their point of view or beliefs. I live my life the way I see it, and I try and pass down my values and morals to my kids. When they become adults they can live life how they choose.

Free will, we all have it.

That has nothing to do with the punishment itself. Politics and everything else come into after that. California is a fucked up state, Texas usually takes care of business long before that.

Again, the argument is strictly either for or against the death penalty. I believe there are certain crimes that are so heinous that they deserve the death penalty if convicted.

When your argument against it is because it takes 20 years, well then, that really has nothing to do with the death penalty.

DWI laws don't deter, shoplifting laws don't deter, show me a law that was put on the books to deter crime. Punishments are just that, a punishment for committing a crime.

Sure it does because a trial and life sentence ends it for the family at the moment the sentence is handed down.

Come on TF, the possibility of death is much different than the possibility of parole. Sun and moon different things.

Do you honestly think a criminal is going to think about that before committing a crime?

I've always respect TF's opinions as well. We serve in kind of the same line of work.

Anyone is capable of murder if pushed far enough TF. You certainly know that.

Do you even know what crimes are considered for the death penalty? I can kill my next door neighbor when I get home, I'm not getting the death penalty.

I guess I'm just different. If I came home from work one night and someone murdered my whole family, I'm going to want the death penalty for them. Does anyone think I'd give a shit about court? Hell, I'd probably take the m'fker out myself if I had the chance.

I would as well. I just don't think it's effective. That's all.
