You don't pay attention to the truth do you? Oil prices were down today and other than people that might want to gouge customers, are completely uneffected by terrorism that isn't specifically related to the process of getting oil out of the ground all the way down to getting gas for cars or houses. If anything, this could lower gas prices if it were to put a chill on the travel industry. Gas prices are actually levelling off and could go down a bit before May when the summertime increase always kicks in due to demand.
Then you guys are getting robbed. I think your gas prices are just going up because oil prices are going up all over. The flow through of pricing in most countries is a lot slower and much more government mandated than in the US. When you have such a huge cushion in the price for taxes, you can decide when and how much to change the price. In the US it is based on what the market will bear and what the refiners are willing to crack.
SP, actually the price is about $1.10 on the NYMEX so it isn't 100% tax. The federal government charges 18 cents a gallon in gas tax, while the UK charges $3.29. The US government earns well under 1% of its total revenue from gas taxes; the UK earns almost 20% from them.

Gas prices are a politicians' favorite stump speech because they can say crap that sounds good, yet it really never has a chance in hell of accomplishing anything. Unless we decide that building and maintaining roads isn't important to our economy, they can't lower gas taxes and they certainly have no power to change market conditions. The more they "threaten" to increase supply by drilling, the more they egg on OPEC to continue to cut supply thereby raising prices. The only thing that will lower gas prices is cutting demand and there are very few proposals that aim to do this.

Unless the scientists are incredibly wrong, there is no chance new Alaskan oil will have any effect on the price we pay for oil. We would give less to other countries, but a completely neglible amount. That is the unfortunate truth. We don't produce enough oil and don't have enough reserves to make a difference in the international markets short of cutting our demand. I don't say this as a political point, but as a point of marketplace reality. I worked as an analyst of the oil market for about 14 months and for as many theoretical solutions, there still is the reality that we consume too much to be anything but at the mercy of the markets. I don't pretend to think there is a way for us to cut our consumption to levels that would affect world prices. OPEC countries are enjoying their windfall too much to give them up and adding supply would almost certainly result in them cutting their supply down because they are already running near capacity except in Saudi. Most countries would gladly protect some of their reserves and back off their production for a bit if they could keep prices high and not be worried that non-OPEC countries would steal most of their share.

Gas is $2.20 where i live that is 100% tax. Who cares what the tax is in the UK? Are we socialist?

The state with the highest taxation is Massachusetts, it is reasonable to assume a guy who raises taxes on everything will raise them on gas too.

I average about 300 miles a week and am pleased as punch to pay gas taxes.
